i know this might be an obvious no brainer. i have a 10 year open entry
L visa. im switching to an x1 visa. does my L visa get canceled out?
After a year, do i need to go all the way back to the states to get another 10 year open entry, or can you get one in Lao/Hk. thanks
L visa will be canceled. Don't know if you can get a ten year in HK, but policies change year to year.
When I applied 2 years ago HK would only give a 9 year.
I guess you won't need to do the visa runs for 12 months but otherwise why??
To answer the original question, the L visa will be cancelled and you'll need to makea new application. The only people who can reliably answer the second part of your question are the PSB.
For China, you may ONLY have one kind of visa. Any previous or pre-existing and valid visas will be cancelled upon approval of your new visa.
thanks for all the answers, to debaser i just wanna know what my future options are. to alpage was a it a 2 months at a time 9 year open entry visa. 9 years seems like a strange number.
China changes the rules often. In the fall before national week we phoned Laos and they could do a visa. But when we arrived they couldn't. Neither could thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, south Korea, etc.
The rule had been enforced (because it's always a rule) that you had to go to your home country. Apparently this happens 1-2 times each year for a 4-8 week period.
Luckily Hong Kong was still processing visas. They will likely always be your best bet but you may need to go to your home country.

Whenever I have had to leave for a visa, not often, I take the opportunity to buy a new laptop. For that reason I go to Hong Kong. It is easy to get English based Windows, and you have more choice. A double whammy if you need new tech. Admittedly HK is not cheap, but a trip does not need to be that expensive.
@Trk11 - legally you need to be on a student visa to study just like you need to be on a work visa if you work. It issaid that some people on a 10 year visa work and/or study because they don't want to give up that visa. Just be aware that there are some pretty severe punishments for not being on the correct visa but if you did decide to take the risk you wouldn't be the first to do so.
