"Visit Lhasa if you get the chance - suggest you neither fly nor take a train right through"
no i will not be riding my bicycle there
I took the train to Lhasa from Beijing. Not so nice, so I flew back. Friends visiting from the US brought with them a drug called Diamox which we took to prevent altitude sickness. Still it was difficult to breath going up even a few steps. Intense radiation from the sun compelled us to wear hats. At a base camp near Mt. Everest we slept in a crowded tent where they burned yak dung for heat. Door and window flaps closed. Talk about O2 deprivation! I started to see pastel neon ghost-like images outlining where people had stood a moment before. Woke up at night having serious difficulty breathing. Next time I would insist on leaving a door or window open despite the cold.
