Did a visa run to HK, and could not use public wifi on my phone, except on the airport express train and in the hotel room. Not on the bus, McD, KFC etc. I was redirected to register for a temporary China Mobile HK account.
Has anyone found a work around?
You can buy a 3g/4g data sim cards for like 60hkd. I got one at "3" mobile shop for my next trip. They are valid for like a year. I think mine has like a three day data pass. Found the store and sim just browsing around a shopping mall. It's a prepaid kit so all you need is money, no registration or paperwork. Store accepted credit card also. Can always hotspot phone if you need wifi for tablet or laptop.
Anyways here is a link to a an article about it, though I didn't follow this guy's advice but seems the same.

Thanks Alex, I will try that. It is funny how sometimes HK is China and sometimes it isn't.
Tell you what, I'm in Shenzhen right now with 20ms pings to Hong Kong and the internet is friggin' awesome. The VPN providers should bounce through here.
That cool. I'm also in Shenzhen, but when I start up by VPN it says I'm in Guangzhou.
@tigertiger. I forgot to mention I had my international roaming "opened" at the main Unicomm service center. Voice and SMS on roaming in HK are actually not onerous. Data is a bit more, like maybe 2rmb per MB? I didn't use roaming very much besides to test it works, but that's an option if you are going to use very little data. You can ask the service center for actual rates.
We did, they wanted 1500 rmb deposit. I didn't go this way as I wrongly thought I could use wifi in HK.
