For you two wheelers, Josh Summers is promoting cycling.
I don't know Josh but his travel book on Xinjiang is very accurate.

In my opinion Yunnan is the best place I've so far found for cycle touring in the world. I've tried a lot of other places: Australia, France, Laos, Romania, Taiwan, Thailand, etc. but Yunnan has remained my favorite. I think cycle tourists with experience would take the hills around the Karakoram region very seriously...
For another trip, closer to home, the Xiong Brothers bike shop based here in Kunming are planning to lead a group to cycle from Kunming to Nepal via Tibet again in September... I'm training every day but still seriously doubt I'll be in good enough shape to make it by then. If anyone wants to do a long trip without guide costs with friendly people, consider introducing yourself to the owners and stating your interest.
Of course you would be in good enough shape to make that trip by September... that's still 5 months away! Don't sell yourself short.
Haha, man those are some killer mountains ... 3000+ meter passes ... one after the other .. with nothing to eat but Tibetan yak-butter tea (urgh) ...
Hey, where's the Xiong Bros. shop? I'm in the market for a decent bike. Nothing fancy, just something to take out on the weekend.
Would also love some route recommendations. If you can link to any maps, I'd be extremely grateful.
Feel free to PM me if you have any other tips, etc.
Hi all,
if you are really cycling Karakorum or nepal/tibet you must be in great physical shape!!! this is not for average cylcler´s.... I cycled 1000 km and more on one trip, but in flat area´s along river´s in europe... But cycling there is a very different story...you have to be professonally prepaired...
