Hello all,
I have recently moved to the north of Kunming and am looking for some authentic (or as close as I can get) Japanese food. I enjoy both sushi and teppanyaki so suggestions for both would be greatly appreciated. Please be specific about location as I do not know the area well yet.
Thanks!
Probably your best bet for decent sushi in Kunming is a plane ticket to Tpkyo.
None of these places are in the North.

Closest to the North I can think of is at the GreenMarket basement level of the new shopping complex just south of Beijing lu and 2nd ring roundabout. They sell prepacked sushi platters (decent, nothing special). But their fresh cut salmon sashimi is pretty good. Can buy the pickled ginger at other end of sushi aisle.
A popular sushi Kunming people like is fruit sushi. Fruit wrapped in rice and seaweed and dtencef in ketchup and mayonnaise. I have heard through Chinese acquaintances it is not unheard for conflicts to occur on Japanese restaurants because the staff will not cool the sushi. There is also dome superstition about you MUST have wasabi as it heats up the raw fish and makes it safer. I have tried a couple places but it was so expensive for the quantity and quality. There is a street sushi vendor who fixes me up good and that is the best I have had on KM unless you have much money and go to a five star hotel restaurant. Even then it won't be like the stuff you get in the States.
