In the USA, we call this technique the "NO FLY" List. It is amongst many legal tools used to prevent US citizens and residents from supplying material or emotional support to alleged terrorist groups.
I don't particularly see how this is "eye opening".
In addition to these tools - we (the USA) also carry out remote assassinations (drone strikes). Our rule of law - which used to demand due process of law and a guarantee to a trial by a jury of our peers - we snuffed that out and now only allegedly apply it to US citizens (not sure about legal residents)...and don't forget those remote assassinations by drone strikes (collateral damage be damned).
But we don't hear about those things in the news....why is that?
drone assasin? if we dont hear about it in the news then how do we know to comment? i have read it often. and the passport restriction is not a surprise. read about it a week or so ago. seems they are also collecting han passports as well in that city
There has been and continues to be hundreds of column inches and hours of broadcast debate on the morality and legality of drone strikes. Not to mention marches and protests. It may not suit your argument, but it's a fact.
There is non so deaf or blind as the wilfully deaf and blind.
@Liumingke: this doesn't surprise me. I don't like it. Yes it's done elsewhere.
China knows very well who is pulling the strings and must react to protect itself from outside influence. A few weeks ago there was a thread about China putting restrictions on NGOs here in China. All these measures are necessary to keep China safe so I do not blame China for doing this. When blanket policies are made, of course some innocents suffer and this is the case in this article.
Expect to see more of this in the near future. Also, another thread about bashing white/chinese couples. I especially loved the thread about the typical foreigners who come to China.

It was no surprise how this thread did NOT receive the usual 10 page of replies and was quickly buried.
The NO Fly List is a joke, The purpose of this list is not to stop terrorist but to destroy the lives of anyone who dares to speak out against the govt. Many a public speaker has been added to this list. George Galloway and David Icke were both added to this list to restrict their travel and public engagements as well as a few others.
Not to mention Mike Springman who worked for 20 years for the state dept. He worked in Saudia Arabia visa section in early 2000s. He denied visas to people he felt had no reason deserved a visa. The CIA quickly got rid of him and issued the visas to all those people.
Underwear bomber, shoe bomber, and all these other weirdos all come from the same source. People travelling all over the world with no passport. Not a single terrorist can do anything without the help of NGOs and the CIA. When so-called terrorists go on a suicide mission with knives into a crowded train station only to kill the locals, it clearly shows this is a false flag. Did this act make Chinese people feel empathy towards the minority groups of Xinjiang? Of course not, it did the exact opposite as that was the intended purpose of this violent act. Boston Tea party, the Americans/British dressed up like Indians and dumped the tea.
A few years back there were some riots going on in NW China. How did China put an end to all this? They stopped all foreigners from coming in and got rid of every foreigner in the area. The riots ended quickly.
Back to point, CHina knows very well who is pulling the strings in places such as Hong Kong (riots), Tibet, and XinJiang and it is doing all it can to prevent more terrorism from abroad.
China does not have a problem with people like us who live in China and remain here semi-permanantly. We renew our visas in accordance with laws and we are not coming in and out and travelling to many countries other than here in SE Asia. We are married to Chinese citizens and call China our new home. The problem comes from those who are going back and forth, changing visas regularly, and have a passport that looks like a UN official travelling to every country in the UN. For those who ever worked at an embassy, they will tell you that there are people who show up every once in a blue moon to have a service done and they are never seen again until 10 years later to renew their passport. While there are others who come and go often for some unknown reason. These are the people China is looking out for.
As the US and a few other western countries interfere more and more in China's business, it is us who live here peacefully will probably pay the price. I am sure, that day will come.
Real terrorist (Freedom Fighters) attack police stations, govt offices, and public officials. They do NOT kill the local population because that makes them lose support of the people which they need.
IRA is a great example, they only attacked govt bldgs and offcials. As soon as they were infiltrated by MI5, the attacks began on their own people. East Timor, same case and there is a long list of similar tactics used by USA and the Not United Kingdom (England). I have never met a Scot or an Irishman who ever said he was from the UK.
@Liumingke1234. Who's next.
They should deny passports to those Chinese tourists that let their kids pee in Thailand's most revered site or carve their names into ancient monuments. Or maybe deny passports to people who do bat shit crazy stuff at airports.
