Road Sign Logic

mike4g_air (788 posts) • 0

Road signs in Yunnan, especially Kunming have always been oddly placed, unclear or non existent.

Today i wasted 60km driving until i understood there was a detour.. plus

The pamphlet given to me was a dictation of the massive detour to undertake, no maps, pictures or briefing warning an illiterate of a detour...

Lazy, uneducated position holder unable to accomplish a task in a standard manner.

Off with their heads!!!

One highway sign that defies logic is a picture of a bridge with a red line across the bridge indicating there are NO ON RAMPS nor EXITS attached to this bridge..
What's the logic of announcing a bridge/ overpass that you cant use??

On a slightly different note, does anyone know when you are allowed to continue to the right at a red traffic light and when it's forbidden? I've been driving in Kunming for many years but never heard a definitive rule...

@mike

I don't know many locals who can read a map, this includes taxi drivers.
Other roadsign probably means 'you must not drive up to the bridge. Maybe there was a problem with trucks driving across the dirt and joining traffic dangerously.

@Ocean
From what I can tell. If there is a red right pointing arrow no right turn. Otherwise ok.
Or if you are unsure apply the general rule for red lights, 'stop if a cop is there'. ;-)

The best is when there is a split in the road and the both signs say Lijiang. One takes 45min, the other 3 hours.
