Anybody knows some nice MTB trails here? I went with local guys from bike shop one day, but they took me to the extreme one. Of course for showing off. Took us 1 hour to get there and 10-15 min down. It was to steep and dangerous. Wheels didnt grip in tho the ground ( and I have Pro stuff ) when sliding down on mixture of pebbels and dry leafs. Some loose branches also getting into spikes, coz path is not really cleaned out. All the time on brakes, couldnt let it go, no jumps no carving turns etc. I discovered few normal ones and I was thinking to map them out, but I dont have GPS and 3g doesnt work there all the time. I wonder if there is any site or map dedicated to the MTB around the city? The most of these trail have "walking" beginning or end, and some places are even dangerous to walk. I would post some pics here, but no attachment button here.
Sounds like you want MTB for tricks and stuff, not just the being in nature part.
For the half the year when it's open, Changchongshan in central north Kunming is great. It's the only place I've seen proper jumps set up except where I'm guessing you probably went, which is southwest sort of behind Xishan.
I did few in Mianshan forest eco park and then from there towards to the West mount. via Baozhu eco park. Ive found sort of construction road going below the ridge of the mount and gives nice view on KM all the way but it ends after few km in place calls Xiaoxiantag (where Shizui station is but towards to the hills) I had to slide down kind risky slope. Other place I went is Huashanpo, that big green area behind Countryside park.,i went to some village and got into the forest. Nice forest track but I was too tired coz its quite far to get there and was too late aswell. I dont exactly need some big airs, coz mi bike is Xross country style. Its lite and not that hard as downhill ones. I like to do part of nature cycling with obstacles ( i dont mind walking with bike on shoulder ), I like to get up hill and stay ( cycle ) there for a while, not just go down in 10min . Im also looking for a mate who would join me in this discover trails thing.
It's a bit old, but peruse this conversation. Has lots of good tidbits:

Im just at Chenggong mountain entrance is closed due to some costr.project. They turn around everybody .So I guess it would be fun park with KTV and entrance fee nex year.
Or it might be related to new infrastructure construction.
just update to Chenggong trail. From cigarette factory side there is some Changchong Shan park project, so hopefully its gonna be some nice stuff. And left side ( entrance to summit ) is guarded same as from temple side ( end of trail ). Btw. anybody know the name of this temple? I forgot to ask them. The mount. is closed probably for "fire season" as every year but probably also coz they are cutting down some trees broken by strong winds. I met few young bikers who were waiting for 4.30pm when guards have off and then they can go on trail. Also possible early morning. The other option is, after cigarette factory, when red brick wall ends and tarmac road turns left ( normaly you would continue on rocky road to the mountain), you stay on that tarmac rd. It goes bit down and then steep up. In certain point it sligtly turns right and there is a muddy road behind the house on left. Take the muddy one and pass trought the gate, go et the end. You will end up in some kinda mine place. If u look toward, slightly on left u will see small path with bai cai around ( to get on this path is bit difficult ) which goes to the forest. U need to walk this one with bike on your back approx 10min and then u come out at the bottom of the trail without being spotted .
you mean the quarry, right? not a mine?
Still some not bad options up bao zhu...
At the top of the road before heading down to the downhill tracks (where most bikers stop), take the major dirt road on the left (watch for trucks, can get dusty). Up the road about 5km take a left and keep following your nose exploring a few decent tracks.
Do the first part of the downhill (the least dodgy) to the part with the nice view after the big jump and the smaller one, then turn left. This is a brilliant sometimes technical x country track. Watch out on this track for some big worm spots (writhing wriggling masses of worms) which I have never seen before! Ends at a cemetery where you can carry your bike through to a service road on the other side. Follow this to a Y intersection at a small cornfield next to a little house (yapping small dog), turn left to get back to the road (keep straight). I think you could turn right past the house maybe to hit the trail opposite side but I never tried. This trail is a very good x country ride which you can combine with the other bao zhu normal trails making a fairly good figure of 8 ride returning to the bottom of bao zhu. I used to do this as a run all the time about 12 km) - up bao zhu via the road, start of downhill track, turn left as above, take road back to start of downhill tracks, do start of downhill, turn right past the almost landslide hills (don't hang around), take the sometimes technical track down (watch for walkers).
There are also some good tracks that can be very long up jin dian beyond the expo gardens. Ride past the dam, stay on the road for about 10km more until you get to a village at the top of a series of climbs (you will likely see other cyclists here on the weekends). From here you can go right to hit some decent trails that can last for 30km plus (find your way!) or continue on the road a little and go left up through some villages to a quarry road with some interesting technical trails coming off the left... These all seem to end near a damn where a few people fish. Contact Lee at Pegasus cycles for these ones, he knows them pretty well and bikes them with (sometimes large) groups on Saturdays (look for "Guided Group Cycling to nearby hills" event).
I would go exploring with ya, but aren't in KM for the foreseeable future sorry!
Haali: yes, u r right. quarry,I just couldn't find the right word :-)
