I haven't had any problems at all with Yahoo mail for ages and I don't use any VPN. BBC seems scuppered though.

They did block BBC because of their criticism of the Chinese government.

Is anyone else experiencing problems loading Yahoo mail? In the last few days I've often gotten errors within Yahoo mail and occasionally can't log in at all.

All this is not improved even with a VPN.

Is Microsoft's live mail a better alternative for working within China? Do I need to break down and finally use QQ mail?

If you're trying to access during peak user periods (0800-0900, lunchtime - roughly 1130-1400, and evenings - roughly 1900-2200), you may experience difficulties if you live in an area of heavy internet usage. Look at the number of WIFI routers and that should provide a clue. If you live in a high-rise where most everyone subscribes to IPTV - you'll have problems connecting to most websites hosted outside of china.

As an alternative fix - try restarting your computer - that will clear the DNS cache (usually) along with your IP address. You may also want to try turning your router off for a minute and then restarting it. That MAY give you a new IP address.

You can also look into using alternate DNS addresses - there was a separate string on DNS servers (such as google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), which (if you can connect to the DNS servers) provide more reliable access to foreign-hosted websites.

As for microsoft mail - I've NEVER been able to login to live.com and hotmail has been consistently more unreliable than yahoo, but friends with hotmail accounts have no problems (they use china telecom, I use a cheap ISP, which connects to the outside world via China telecom).

There are several other temporal fixes - but the most reliable solution is a RELIABLE VPN (not just any old cheap VPN, as they're constantly being blocked).

On another note - Bloomberg has retaken the reigns of his firm, with the stated aim of re-entering the China market. Bloomberg.com has always been painful for me to access because of its occasionally critical reporting on China - but lately - ZOOM - seems it's been un-blackholed...whoohoo..
