@jj123. Perhaps they are burning trash (small branches) trimmed from trees. That generates a lot of smoke.
Or it could be burning for the same reason as in my area last night. Maybe some spring festival thing.
Either that or they are getting all of the bonfires done before the government inspectors get back from their holidays.

If you are worried about pollution for health reasons, you also need to consider that the combination if altitude and pollution is especially harmful. Most of Yunnan is at altitude. Additionally, as you move into smaller cities there is an increase in the amount of wood and coal burning, not just for heat, but for cooking.
Regarding Kunming pollution. I did notice a significant drop in air quality with a lot of dirty haze around XiShan, perhaps 2 days ago, not sure why. This is not normal, even if it was 3 years ago. I also noticed last night, there was a lot of wood smoke in the air in the same area. Perhaps some ritualistic thing for spring festival.

I think it is just people who make stuff, or trade from home. Go have a look and ask around. I would expect that some Chengguan guy will be collecting 'rent'.
Let us know what you find out, please.

Off topic, but related to theme songs. When we watched terrestrial TV we listened to the whole theme, even if only in the background while we quickly made a cup of tea or finished off some other chore. With streaming, or watching box sets, we quickly FF over the theme song and titles. We are missing a lot of great music.
Everything else said by the last two posters can be captured within the idea that we no longer live in a society, we live in a market.

This has moved.
The cut flowers are about 700m east on Duonan Jie. The plants and trees are about 700 m west and follow Duocai Section.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
