Forums > Food & Drink > Game: Spot the Fake Restaurant Reviews

@tallamerican
Nice idea, but unenforceable, and un-policable.

If I read reviews, I usually question the extremes at either end of the scale. Overly bad reviews are sometimes the result of happening at the end of a BCD. Overly good reviews, if isolated, are also suspect.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Bicycle Brands, which is better..

Ref US bikes.
I don't know about now, but in 2000 we had problems sourcing spares for one, incl ball bearings.

Reason?
Imperial units, inches, and teenths/32nds.

Something to watch out for if you find a US bike in this market.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Shipping TO China

Minerals, vitamins and supplements are treated under the same regulations and controls as pharmaceuticals in China.
Spirulina is everywhere here. Other supplements can be expensive (GNC is here but expensive) or the local brands are cheap but people do not trust the quality of local brands. It would be cheaper to buy supplements (inc GNC) in HK.
Importing of lens would be hit and miss in KMG. Importing stuff to tier one cities is easy, they really are too busy with real trade to mess around with parcels. However, we have had no end of problems in KMG and they seem to always want some money. If you can do it through HK it would be easier. Also stuff coming to Kunming must clear customs twice (port of entry and KMG), it takes weeks and there are often foul-ups.

Unless you are a dedicated artistic photographer, it may be better to use your time in HK to buy a new digital camera. It will pay for itself in development costs (not spent) of photos.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Opening a Chinese bank account

The only comments I can make are that Bank of China are in every city. As the national bank they are also permitted to exchange dollars, should you ever need to transfer monies from home. Not every bank is can do international transfers. This is worth considering in case of emergency.
Exchange rate fees in China are high, this seems to be universal.

Blobbles, if there are not trees, you may be able to make out farmers routes on Google Earth. You can sometimes.

If you have personal GPS you could also check progress by pre-defining lat-long from Google Earth before you leave home and write them on a print out.

Just an idea.

This has moved.
The cut flowers are about 700m east on Duonan Jie. The plants and trees are about 700 m west and follow Duocai Section.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
