Forums > Living in Kunming > Places to retire around the world

I was surprised to see Guam listed as a good place to retire. For Americans anyway.

Property not to expensive, much cheaper than Hawaii, good medical care and transport links (to USA), uses USD and speaks English. The only downside is that everything is imported, including all fresh produce, making purchases expensive.

Forums > Living in Kunming > 'Green card' process may get easier

Reading on further

[quoted person] 'said it is sensible to require a minimum of 10 years, since China is among the "hottest destinations" in the world.

Green cards provide foreigners with a sense of security, especially for those married with children.

"Green card applicants usually have devoted a big chunk of their life to China and deserve the convenience of permanent residency," she said.'

So not much hope for any non-tech person with a family at present. Hopefully this is at least a beginning.

I can see a lot more out migration of Chinese talent, like my wife. It is easier for her to settle legally in Europe than it is for me to settle here in China.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Looking for a Liveable Studio Space

Observations only.
What you might call studio space, if you want to exhibit, would be prohibitively expensive downtown. Any descent areas they would probably not allow dual use (incl habitation).

You might find cheap space near the art college. Cheap commercial units allow dual use. But your visitors will be students mostly, looking for ideas for their own projects.

You could rent an undecorated house or apartment in Chenggong. Chengong would be a potential area as middle class families will move in. There may also be some cheap to rent (unlikely) commercial units that have 2 floors.

A large apartment or house will have many rooms upstairs, few interior walls sownstairs, water, electric, minimal lighting and probably one wall socket in each room. But you could easily put in a toilet, shower, kitchen sink for about 1000rmb. No one will care if you get paint on the floor as they are bare concrete.
Undecorated houses ban be rented cheaply, but you may have to relocate after a year. However there is no shortage of undecorated places in Chenggong.

Just some thoughts

We can argue about temperatures until the cows come home, and for political reasons, many people do. That is why the term 'global warming' has been superseded by the term 'climate change'.

As for the future. An important ecological presupposition is that an environment cannot be destroyed, only modified. The earths environment may be modified to a point where the earth can no longer support human life at the levels we have been used to. What happens then? Perhaps a lot of techno-fixes, to create micro climates that are less stressful for human life.

Perhaps, Africa will become more temperate, and other areas of the globe will become more hostile to life. Perhaps the droughts and famines will visit Europe and the Americas.

In nature, where the environment changes faster than animals can evolve, there is 'cultural evolution'. This is where animals change thier behavior in order to survive. The finches in the Galapagos isands are an example of this, where different species feed at different levels of the same tree, as a way of avoiding direct competition with other species. Personally, I think there is room for humans to undergo more cultural evolution.

Whatever the arguments about global warming.
Whoever is to blame.

DianChi is green with algae, and unsafe to swim in.
Urban air pollution/smog is recognised as a major problem in China.

The article mentions the kitchen supply market at DaShangHui.
I thought I had walked all of DaShangHui, but don't recall seeing kitchen supplies.

Can anyone give the exact location?

This has moved.
The cut flowers are about 700m east on Duonan Jie. The plants and trees are about 700 m west and follow Duocai Section.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
