For air quality go to aqicn.com and type in any city. When you buy fresh vegetables you must them thoroughly before cooking. Eating out is less of an issue than 10 years ago but still far from ideal.

It is easy to say good riddance. Easy to forget that a lot of that 1bn comes out of peoples pension schemes, and a lot of the small investors were not corporate fat cats, and in many cases ordinary people, including Canadians. Not the nouveaux riche with dirty slush money to hide.

The Anbang case is a new variation. It shows how some cities have fallen over backwards for the big corporate investments, and their due diligence has been shown to be inadequate. This is one of the downsides of Canada not having federal systems for this. Many provinces have their own way of doing things, and some think that they have little to learn from other provinces. Hopefully the lessons from this case will be taken on board across Canada.
I would hope that there is a case for compensation if the small investors can start a class action against the city governments concerned.

One down side for teachers, even if they live out, is that there are duty teachers who have a room to monitor the students in the evening and enforce lights out; for those students who board. Boarding students are normal in China.
The upside, if they are fresh out of college, is they don't have to rent accommodation outside (although they still pay fees to the school). This last thing is a parallel with Miami's situation. There is also access to breakfast in the school canteen.
I don't know about Chinese schools, but in the universities, staff can often buy the apartments on new campuses at lower than market prices.

PR 101. Apologize, then find out what happened. It is hard to apportion/accept blame if it is too early to have the facts. If you don't know what happened don't speculate, because if you are wrong it will only come back to bite you. But it is never to early to apologize.

If you don't know what has happened an apology is not an admission of guilt.
From the looks of things OSI have taken action, and are fully cooperating with the authorities to make sure this does not happen again.

As for McD and KFC, they are paying the price for the actions of an unscrupulous supplier. It is unlikely that McD Corp or Yum Brands are in any way culpable. They do not appear to be the villain in this case.
Responsibility ultimately rests with OSI, for poor supervision. There is also the Chinese practice of 'open inspections' (the government inspectors tell you when they are going to visit), and the problem of a legal system where the penalties are not hard enough to be a real deterrent.

Trying to defend or explain it away would be worse PR, as it would look like the old shift the blame game. A favourite tactic in face cultures.

In fairness to OSI, on Sunday they started recalling ALL meat products and withdrawing them from this market.

This has moved.
The cut flowers are about 700m east on Duonan Jie. The plants and trees are about 700 m west and follow Duocai Section.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
