Carrefour, Metro offer fixed pricing. Range of qualities from fair to middling. And you can get branded. Remember that this is China, there are no real bargains, and you get what you pay for.

I bought an 8rmb set of in-ear phones. Bass response OK, but no midrange or high end. Not much good, even for voice. There is more to speakers/phones than simply wiring up a speaker. Same with stereo systems. There are good amplifier circuits and poor ones. Really a waste of 8rmb.

Yes Gompo, I think the Banks in Europe and America have already proved your point.

I also think it is good that banks do not give people access to funds unless they can show, to the bank's satisfaction, that they are who they say they are.
I really don't have a philosophical or procedural problem with the bank asking for the same documentation I used to open the account. Especially as the alternative would leave me open to the risk of identity theft.

To be fair to the mods.
If someone registers multiple accounts (was it 10?), and then uses them to subvert/sabotage the reviews section, then I agree with them stepping in as they did.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Question about local Kunming dialect

If you understand tones, you could use audio or video recordings of people speaking. That way you can develop your own system of analysis that is compliant with recognised phonological systems, standardise and codify it. If you use opinions of others, who will all be using a different set of criteria for describing tones, you have a problem, especially with quality control of your analysis.

Audio/video clips you can also re-visit them several times, and submit them as part of your study.

If you go to youku.com and type in 'kunming' or '昆明' you will find lots of klips. This will give you lots of samples of voxpop, many in Kunminghau.

My daughter's school wasn't an elite school.

It was the local middle school. Not even that high in the rankings.

If a school is high in the rankings I am sure parents who are not from that district of the city can find a way to get their children in.

My daughters middle school principal was removed for graft. That was in Shanghai in about 2006.
We had to pay 20 000 rmb, and a watch to get my daughter into the school. This was not a special school by any means. We had just moved into the city mid-year.
Students were told that they must have English tutoring. The tutor was the brother of the head of the English dept. It was 100rmb per student per hour (in 2005), about 2 hours per week. Now that doesn't happen without the principal knowing about it.

This has moved.
The cut flowers are about 700m east on Duonan Jie. The plants and trees are about 700 m west and follow Duocai Section.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
