Forums > Living in Kunming > Yunnan Minorities and Ethnocide

There is always the problem of conservation of a culture vs preservation.

If people choose to eat McD, and Pasta hut. If they move away from traditional Chinese medicine, are they being Westernized? Yes.
Are this ethnic genocide of the Han? Urm.

Many young people will choose to adopt the new. Turn there backs on the old. With or without other agents of change (missionaries, global corporations), change will happen. Is it right? Is it wrong? Who knows.

My ancestors were Irish. Has modernisation, change, breaking the shackles of the powers that were improved the lot of the Irish people over the last 100 years? Hell yes.

Contraception broke all the rules of the accepted culture of the 20th century in Ireland. Average family sizes have more than halved, is that a good thing for society? women not having 18 kids any more?

Ultimately, development leads to a homogenisation of culture, to some degree. It is one thing to say that a society and cultural values should be preserved. It is another to say that an ethnic group should not develop, I know nobody is saying that, but that is the likely effect.

Suggestion

Find out which cafe's, if any, on WenHua Xiang/Wenlin Jie have a juicer.
Get them to quote for 5 gallons of juice.

Expect a big discount, and offer them some of the finished product.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Running Club (Dianchi Lake) 8am every Sunday

Hi Chicha

Thanks for getting back.
Do we assume you are male, about 30?

Do we assume that 8am is when you start running, so meet up and warm up at 7.45?

Do you need to bring 10 RMB to get into the park, if on foot? Or is it free early in the morning? I mention cash as some people may want to run to the meet.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Any designer recommendations?

I am looking for an interior designer. Someone who understands western design philosophy.
I don't need a decoration company, just the design.

I have placed an ad in classifieds, but does anyone have any recommendations? Or people to avoid?

If you are probably going to repeat this, it would be worth getting an industrial juicer. I think I saw one in Metro.

Just a thought, I have not idea of your plans.
If you are going to do a lot of this, to sell maybe?
There are a lot of apple orchards as you go out towards the stone forest. The first big town after you leave Kunming on the highway (past the toll gate), that whole area is orchards. You may get a good deal on windfalls.

This has moved.
The cut flowers are about 700m east on Duonan Jie. The plants and trees are about 700 m west and follow Duocai Section.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
