Freedom of choice. Hmm. I choose not to go swimming in my local pool because people pee in it. That does not mean the current situation is laudable.
I think there is a parallel here on GoKunming. And people have exercised their choice not to swim here any more. An excellent example of freedom of choice at work. Not something to be proud of IMHO.
If you know the decoration market on Changhong Lu. As you drive SW down Changhong Lu, opposite the market, i think it is at the most west end, at the intersection with Dongju Lu. On the right hand side of Changhong Lu is a building with CNC in huge letters on a huge roof hoarding. I think, but don't know for sure, that they do CNC cutting. I have been meaning to go in and check.
I also wouldn't know if they do CAM, but it may be worth a shot.
I think that many of these illegal golf courses are attached to real estate developments. It makes the real estate more saleable. There is usually one free membership per household. It is a value plus type of marketing. Dianchi Wei Chen properties used to come with a membership of the golf club. However, from what I have been told, most households sold the membership on.
Water is the biggest issue. I think I read somewhere that upto 10% of Beijing's fresh water supply was being used on golf courses, and this was a major driver for the outlawing of them (no pun intended).
BTW all the maps sheets I have seen online for China are scans of papers sheets. Many are low quality scans and hard to read, all are out of date. Old town Dali, Lijiang, and Shangrila have not changed. But all of these places have new cities or districts that were not there in the past.
Kunming has changed a lot in 6 years, many old districts do not exist, there are new roads and a subway system. This is why frequently updated maps like Google and Baidu are so important. And one impact of these maps, is that few new hard copy maps are produced in China.
Yes you can print Google maps. But you will need to print them before you come to China, unless you have a vpn and can access them where they can printed.
Alternatively you can print them to an image file on your computer and save them. That way you can print the image file whilst in China.
You can also use map.baidu.com, the maps will be in Chinese characters, but at least you can print a map with a street layout. Then use the road name signs for comparison.
Following one of the links in the article above society.yunnan.cn/html/2015-06/24/content_3791994.htm there are details of how Operation Fake Sword unfolded in Yunnan. (in Chinese but it translates will in Chrome).
Mentions of the internet reporting for food and drug safety problems, and of the 200 kids who got food poisoning in Songming last year.
@fixit.
If you can find the original reports online, there is more detail, and it is clearer.
The stuff was being transferred from frozen, but with no cold chain some of it defrosted and was re-frozen several times. Some of it subsequently started to rot.
If someone can tell me how to put an arrow on a google map, and then post a link to the annotated map, I can put up the location of the wholesale market that specialises in mushrooms. They will be much cheaper there than anywhere else.
Be aware thought that the qizong are currently new season and about 45rmb/liang i.e. 450rmb/Kg.
This is a bit of a toxic industry, especially in China. It needs regulating and enforcement. Glad to see this has happened.
As for 1rmb tours. They should be very easily to regulate out by targeting them. It is, I believe illegal to tie tourists to spending money. I have no sympathy for anyone in this case.
Where Mike4gair keeps his boats is a good location. There is easy parking, and I am pretty sure the pedal boats. It is on the north shore away from the crowded areas, but there are some places to eat not far from there.
You may also be able to arrange some sailing with Mike.
A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.
Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.
In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.
They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.
They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
