There are a number of local NGOs and voluntary activities in Kunming. Don't restrict yourselves to English speaking activities. The universities looking for extracurricular activities want to see rounded people, extra English experience is not required, and might look a little non-altruistic.
Don't go into the nightclubs in the new city.
The best parts of the old city are a few streets out from the centre, away from the tourist spots.
Don't expect to find many locals in the old city. Mostly owned by richer people from the bigger cities now.
Do visit Shuhe town. It is about 3km outside Lijiang. It is, in my mind, a lot nicer place to visit; a bit touristy but not anywhere near as commercial as Lijiang. No cars, only horses and feet. From here it is a nice walk to Baisha the Naxi village.
Do visit the Naxi village and Naxi Museum. This is an area not visited by many tourists at all.
I was also thinking along similar lines to Texas Boy. There is money in both the legal and illegal collection of oil. That is why people collect the stuff.
There could also, I think, be a good case for clearing the drains of oil. Oil in the drains could cause other problems with sanitation and vermin.
There is buffalo milk for sale in cartons. Does anyone know if this is full of lactose etc.?

The cut flowers are about 700m east on Duonan Jie. The plants and trees are about 700 m west and follow Duocai Section.
A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.
In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.
They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.
They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.

发布者In the outlying areas of Kunming, Guandu and southwards, and out to the airport,elevated tracks have been used.Elevated tracks have been used, but if you already have a developed city then tearing down existing buildings, in many areas, can be controversial and expensive. If you go underneath you leave intact the destinations that people want to travel to.

发布者They may be using the opportunity to switch out some of the tree species that do require a lot of watering for most of the year. This is a huge drain on the water supply (no pun intended) and government budgets for labor.
