Forums > Living in Kunming > Sub-letting

Short term it is often done, but hidden from the landlord. I am not sure a landlord would be happy, as technically sub-letting unofficially is illegal. The landlord is also legally responsible for the tenants and to some degree their activities.
Any foreign tenant should register with the local police, but would need a rental agreement in order to do this.

I also believe that any non-Kunming citizen also needs to register with local police for a temporary ID card, and they too would need a rental agreement.

If by half a year in each place you mean 6 months at a time, then you might find this difficult. If only 2 months at a time, you might have difficulty finding tenants each time.

An alternative might be a flat share, and come to an arrangement about rent when you are not there.

Forums > Study > Yunnan University vs Yunnan Normal University

Ranking a place of employment, is not the same as ranking a place of learning, or even a specific course. If you are going to use the link in the last post, only look at factors that would affect you as a student, not the overall ranking.
For the OPs Qs.
Q1. They will be the same.
Q2-3. Contact the Uni directly.
Q4. Even if you contact the other students, their opinion will be subjective. Some people like lots of homework, some like flexibility, others a rigid methodology, some people like approachable staff.

NB If you are really serious about learning and practice, Kunming people do not speak standard Mandarin. Other cities might be better for you.

For Mass, it might be worth contacting the official Roman Catholic Church in Kunming, to see if they have a sung Mass.
I am not sure if Yunda teaches music, of if any of the Unis in Kunming have a orchestra. If they do, the staff or members of the orchestra may know of local choirs. If not, there may be musicians who have a interest in singing, and you could start your own informal singing group.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Chenggong Area?

I lived in Chenggong in the past, and so I am not up to date, but it is pretty isolating. Think about practicalities like shopping and getting into town. Especially as you don't have a car. Chenggong is very spread out, you could be several KM from any kind of shop if you choose the wrong area.

The places that were established in the old threads are places I would consider strongly if I had a family.
With a family I would consider if there is a supermarket like Carrefour or Walmart yet. Also living near a metro station helps.
Cycling is pretty safe, but you need to be careful crossing road junctions, the cars turning right are usually going too fast.

Blobbles, if there are not trees, you may be able to make out farmers routes on Google Earth. You can sometimes.

If you have personal GPS you could also check progress by pre-defining lat-long from Google Earth before you leave home and write them on a print out.

Just an idea.

This has moved.
The cut flowers are about 700m east on Duonan Jie. The plants and trees are about 700 m west and follow Duocai Section.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
