Ham is pretty safe to cook as it is a cured meat. You can eat it raw if you so desired.
All of the recipes I have state 20mins/pound, at 160 degrees (open) to 20 mins/lb at 190 deg covered in foil.
The problem is also likely to be setting the oven temperature, as most oven thermostats are pretty inaccurate I would set the temps to maybe 175, to at least hit 160.

Because baking ham can dry it out, I would certainly consider a pot roast in a slow cooker for maybe 6 hours. If it is a local ham I would also change the water a couple of times during cooking as Chinese ham is more salty than we get back home.
If you are going to boil ham, a little trick is to turn it off about 30 mins before it is done, and then let it cool in its own liquor for at least an hour. As it cools it will draw moisture back into the meat, giving a more succulent joint.

NB I never used a meat thermometer, but used the Xmins/lb+Xmins equation. We would spear poultry and check that the juices running out were no longer pink/red.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Gift shopping in Kunming for a local

I am not sure about Mall wide vouchers, but department stores like Parksons probably do.

Good gifts, always welcome in China, are foodstuffs or toiletries. The supermarkets are full of gift boxed foods at the moment, and Metro, Walmart, and Carrefour all have gift vouchers.

If it is clothing, then I am pretty sure that Decathlon, and Uniqlo do gift vouchers.
If your other half is a wife, then she will probably not want to spend much money on gifts/frivolities for each other.
If the other half is a long term GF, even then not a lot of money needs to be spent, because if she has not bought you an expensive gift, but you buy her one, she may lose face.

@Janjal. I have just remembered. The fastest way to drive damp out of bedding would be to use an electric blanket. They are usually on special offer in all of the big supermarkets at this time of year. They are much better quality that they were 15 years ago, and are usually up to EU standards.

A thought on the aging population in China. We should not forget the economic changes that have occurred in the last two generations.
The people of retiring age over the next 10 years (50-65 now) are the generation who made the big money. What will they do with the money when they have time on their hands? One of the things they will likely do is travel.
This generation of middle class retirees is not the poor, financially dependent, aged who rely on their children for support. In fact many of them are supporting their children financially.
These people are mobile and rich enough to travel in a way that their parents could only have dreamed of. There are millions of them.

I would guess that the number of people who will be able to afford to travel by air will continue to increase, even if the population declines.
As for there being not a lot to do in Kunming, it has always been the springboard to other places in Yunnan. I just see more people using the springboard.

This has moved.
The cut flowers are about 700m east on Duonan Jie. The plants and trees are about 700 m west and follow Duocai Section.

A reasonable choice of lumber that has improved over time. Fancy hardwoods like walnut, and mahogany are in abundance. There are some plywood and rubber-wood boards available. There are also some kiln dried imported softwoods and merbao available. Some of the lumber is very green, so look for the kiln dried if you need stable timbers.

Echo everything said by others.
Breakfast great and the serve from 8am. Most other places say 9am and they still are not ready.
Sandwiches are cheap 22-32, and really packed full of filling. We got some sandwiches for a day out, the only mistake I made was ordering two, as this was too much. These are seriously good sangars, and they are wrapped in alu foil.

In fairness to Metro, they are a wholesalers, and not really a supermarket. Hence the need for a card, which can be got around.

They have improved in the year I have been away. They now carry a more consistent range of imported foodstuffs and they also seem to have sorted out the mported milk supply.

They have a wider range of electrical appliances now, there is a coice of more than one toast. There is also a better range of seasonal non foods, like clothes, shoes, garden furniture and camping gear.
