Looks like everyones Friday night end of the week rage venting dreams have come true!

No ones apologising nnoble, not sure why you are claiming they are. I also said Gaoxing was "chasing tail", which he was/is by his own admission. At no point did I accuse him of rape.

Dazzer, the important point I believe is the attempt. Thank god he wasn't successful, but on another day he might have been. This bad behaviour reflects badly on lao wai in China because we are stereotyped into one group by many Chinese. Again, unfortunate, but true.

Harriis, who castigates only foreigners? We can (and by the looks of the responses here) castigate anyone we want. No one stated we were castigating only foreigners, I came the closest by saying that when foreigners did something bad, it unfortunately is bad for all of us as the responses to the video show we are all one big group according to many Chinese. As such we should discourage any behaviour of that type in the extreme to other foreigners... to make living in China as easy as possible for us as lao wai. I will castigate anyone however that attempts rape, no matter colour/creed/religion or hairstyle.

Thanks roberto's friend, I think my girlfriends family are slowly understanding, but takes time to bring down years of misunderstanding/ignorance/prejudice. The interesting thing is my girlfriend says here family are very forward thinking and not conservative! There must be some seriously bad impressions out there of foreigners...

Rik, I think we agree in principle on everything except how to change the opinions of stereotyping Chinese people who group lao wai into one group. I think using a collective approach would work best in China (hence my desire to see fellow lao wai pour scorn on the guys actions hopefully making future lao wai visitors to China with a similar attitude think twice), if you believe another way will work, that is your choice. The other thing - please stop misquoting me. Twice you have said "And if they are, you should put them in their place, not apologize or call for harsher punishments for non Chinese." I did not apologize or call for harsher punishments for non Chinese. Putting words in my mouth makes you look silly as it spawns comments on statements that were never made (nnoble's) and makes the argument more extreme and hence opinion more polarised.

Sorry Danmairen if I offended you. My intention is not to group all foreigners together and say we shouldn't do that. My intention is to highlight to the occasional foreigner who thinks this way that, as a foreigner community in an Asian country, we do not condone sexually aggressive behaviour and that such acts have a tendency to reflect badly on all of us.

Rik, you seem to still be in denial about the reality of how we are viewed in China. For instance, growing up my girlfriend was taught that basically every foreigner comes from America. She is 24 yet that built in idea still comes back to haunt her all the time. She comes from a small rural town that hardly every sees foreigners. It shows you that, until recently, Chinese culture has only started accepting the multitude of different people in the world.

In the same context, I have been quizzed by her family and other people if my intentions with her are genuine. Whether I will sell her or not. Whether I am just using her for sex (from her dad). Where I think our relationship is going because they are scared to have a foreigners thinking in the family. This is xenophobia through ignorance, which I battle through and change with every conversation I have with them. But it highlights exactly how we are viewed here. I acknowledge the Xenophobia exists and try to change it, just as you do.

I will quote you when you say "And most Chinese nationals get that, and therefore won't be prejudiced against you because of some drunk rapist in Beijing." Did you do a poll? Wow, that was fast. After viewing this video my girlfriend got worried again (we have been together for over a year). After calming her down I asked her why she was upset - it was because the video reinforced a prejudice which she was taught by her culture. She has also received calls from her sister and mum who have seen the video and started worrying again. The responses to the video as outlined by Danmairen show that clearly a lot of Chinese nationals are prejudiced against foreigners.

"Don't promote that thinking by saying "Oh, but I'm a good laowai, those are the bad laowai"."

The intention is to do the opposite. If we as foreigners react with shock, dismay and anger at another foreigner who has wronged a Chinese citizen, we stand in unison with the Chinese who have the same reaction. When angry Chinese people see many of us standing next to them, they realise that we are individuals that are closer to them and share the same values as them. They won't therefore lump us all together with the bad ass in the video. If we do nothing and try to keep news under the radar, how do you think we look to Chinese who are angry about this? Please answer this question.

"If xenophobia is a problem, the thread and thread title are supporting xenophobia. it is very simple." & "So go ahead and replace the word laowai in what you wrote with "black" or "jew", and see how disgusting, and self hating it is."

Please explain how the thread title and first comment "support Xenophobia". It shows that I despise sexual violence and are shocked at some foreigners attitude towards Chinese. This shows solidarity with Chinese who think the same (probably 99% of them). If you think the title supports Xenophobia, you must also think headlines of papers do the same thing. e.g. www.chinadaily.com.cn/world/2012-05/09/content_15251340.htm (US soldiers are all murdering rapists!), www.telegraph.co.uk/[...] (asians must be all horrible!), www.nytimes.com/[...] (never trust NY city cops!). The Daily Mail: www.dailymail.co.uk/[...] Do you think the use of the words "British man" are offensive?

"ps. there was lots of anti-foreigner sentiment before the period of western imperialism in China." There was and it was xenophobic. Unfortunately from the 1800's to WWII foreign powers made their fears true. And in the last 70 years we have in many cases treated Asians with less than the respect they deserve. I aren't responsible for these actions but I do want Asians to know that I don't support such aggression and manipulation.

Clearly you and your group get it Danmairen.

But we know of 1 guy that does not. Just because you would never act this way does not mean that everyone thinks the same as you. The video clearly evidences this. This is a very strange psychological pattern that many people have "I think like this and so do the people I hang around with, therefore EVERYONE thinks like this" despite evidence to the contrary.

Or are you in denial that there is view held by a number of westerners that Asia is a good destination for exploitive sex? I recommend a visit to Pattaya in Thailand if you harbour such delusions.

Luang Prabang is one of my favourite places in Asia. Laid back locals, cheap, great scenery, good architecture, a few really nice local sights... what more can you ask for. Perfect romantic getaway...

Political achievement or not, Kunming must be one of the only cities in the world that is getting an MTR before it is drastically needed. And poor quality shade trees? I aren't too sure where you are looking but they seem fine to me...

Wether or not they are corrupt, the projects benefit the people first it seems. Unlike other places where projects would be populist or for the elites only...

I suspect the car ownership face thing will continue the increase of cars in the city. The government will eventually start tolling people through high parking charges and the like to discourage it, it won't happen overnight but it will happen just as it has in *insert name of any big city in the world*.

I think Kunming will be an interesting case for the subway vs face value of cars. Kunmings streets aren't really that congested (have you been to Malaysia/Jakarta?) and the majority of workers don't appear to have cars yet. To be honest, I think the subway here is coming in before its really needed. It will be VERY interesting to see if the middle classes that have been aspiring to own a car will continue to aspire to stupidity when most of the subway system kicks in, i.e. once they realise that a car is not needed, is a hassle and a waste of money. One thing I know about Chinese is they are mostly financially savvy, which means they think about where to put there money more. They also care less about personal space than us so a squashed subway is less of a problem. And when they realise they can get from one end of Beijing Lu to the other in 10-15 minutes on the subway or 40 minutes in a car...

Regardless, the majority of the population here has never used an MTR system before, so the first few months of operation will be filled with hilarity I am sure!

I am almost sure the local govt will put a good bus route through to the new airport. Thats the way I will get there, probably by taking a taxi to the last bus stop in the city and then catching it to the airport. Might cost 2 kuai but its better than the 40-50 default charge that most taxis will probably quote...

"If suddenly there are many more competitors, everybody will have a difficult time surviving," he added. "Furthermore, in two years, after the subway is operational, the number of people taking taxis will suddenly drop. Then what do we do?"

This is such a common complaint of so many taxi drivers and completely unfoundered. You go to any big city that has a subway (think HK, NY, Singapore, Rome....) and you see taxis everywhere. What taxi drivers don't realise is the subway means its less likely people own cars (even with their face value). But subways don't go everywhere so you often need to take a taxi to the out of the way place you are trying to get to after getting off the subway.

Subways are actually good for taxis, it causes more short trips more often for drivers, which with a flag fall fee means more revenue.

Its finished??? I look back on it so fondly now, almost being killed by boulders or asphyxiation from the dust. Its a shame other cycle tourists won't get to experience the same exhilaration and breath taking air? Camping in the middle of it was...interesting as well. Ahh well, like all things in China change is inevitable.

Looks like you got the same as me when you went through omgiri! If you are guys are still around we should go for a ride sometime. My usual ride of up and down Changchong Shan is becoming rutted, I think mainly from me!

So fast, so convenient. One star off for opening before the train station stop is connected!

Wow, just wow. Possibly the best Chinese food I have had in Kunming. And in one of the nicest, traditional courtyard style restaurant I have been in. A woman dressed in traditional qi pao playing a gu zheng just adds to it.

We had okra, mushroom soup, dried beef and chou dofu. All top notch with the bill coming in at just over 250 kuai. But we could have fed 3 people for that so not too bad at about 80-90 kuai each. Not the cheapest but for the quality, it's damn good.

If you have people visiting and want to take them to a traditional Chinese style restaurant with Yunnan style food, or want a romantic night out with a gal, you can't go wrong here. Close to Green Lake (down a little alley) for a romantic walk... Just perfect.

Pretty good place for getting all your documents translated and/or notarised. Note that there are a number of notaries in the building which you can find by going up the stairs (the elevators are impossible). But you have to find the stairs to do so... go in the door, head over to the right, go up the big wide stairs which head up a floor, turn right then right again into the elevator area and right again into the stairwells. Whew!

One point off for the elevators never being available and having to hike 7-9 flights of stairs (not good if you have to go 3-4 times a day like I often did!)

This does not stop at the Jinanya hotel at Da Shang Hui as the flyers state (and is on the images tab here). They need to have another stop in the same area or else they are missing out on covering a big chunk of the city.

You can take another bus, the 919C, I believe, if you are nearby Da Shang Hui, which leaves from the bus station on HeHong Lu, nearby the Qianxing road intersection. This bus goes every hour and is white, found at the western end of the station. It is operated by a different company and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to get to the airport due to a large number of stops especially near the airport.

Great bus though if you can catch it!

Friendly people, even got to the talk to the vice consulate, who told me she had done a stint in Malaysia's Siberian Consulate!

English is spoken by some of the Chinese girls working at the desk who are pleasant to deal with. I assume they do Visa's as well but I wasn't here for a visa, this time!
