Forums > Living in Kunming > GoKM forum meetup?

I agree tigertiger, oh the irony.

It's like someone walking down a busy street screaming "WOULD EVERYONE JUST BE QUIET, THERE IS TOO MUCH NOISE..." hence adding to the problem.

Here's a clue everyone who doesn't get it: If you don't like all the inane commentary from crazy.laowai, if you don't like using your own account, if you want to keep GoKM free of all the blather: Don't comment, you are adding to the problem. Silence is a much better censor.

Don't even read posts with titles you don't have answers to or think is going to turn into a s**t storm, you will be much happier.

But this isn't cool crazy.laowai... the reviews section is definitely the place for this, repeating information is bad form. Recommend deleting this thread to GoKM admins (with confirmation from crazy.laowai) to avoid duplication of data.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Scooter Shop Recommendation

Hmmm... nothing wrong with what crazy.laowai did in my opinion, its pretty standard internet forums behaviour to bump a post to the top again. The problem comes if it is done repeatedly - i.e. no one has an answer but the poster keeps doing it.

What's the dealio people? Is bumping considered bad form?

Don't have any scooter shop recommendations. I don't see a lot of scooters with mods around Kunming (probably because modding your electric scooter just isn't as cool as modding a petrol one) so you are probably hard pressed to find one. Not saying they don't exist, probably just not a common shop.

Nobody should want anyone dead based on internet misunderstandings. If you do, you don't understand the nature of internet postings. I highly doubt that includes any of the above, just as I highly doubt anyone intends actual harm on any other one of us. I suspect we will probably get on pretty well in real life! We have possibly seen each other around anyway.

Mine is a tag I have been using for years - based on Mr Blobby who I went through a phase of liking when I was about 12! It stuck as it was unique and hints at my real name. Its also readable and doesn't need a string of numbers to make it fairly unique. Have been thinking of changing to "Flapper" because I tend to go oonnnn and onnnn in comments - I need to learn to write more succinctly. :-)

Sorry tigertiger I disagree - accuracy should never be diluted and/or replaced with esoteric phraseology. In any kind of reporting accuracy is king and the article clearly states "growth IN a quarter". It should be changed as it is incorrect. And growth is NOT always expressed in that way, if it was I wouldn't have found a number of articles stating a quarters growth through google (many currently on the UK's growth rate and from a little news outfits you may have heard of called Reuters/Bloomberg/The Guardian). Growth can be considered over any timespan, it is up to authors and interpreters of financial data to report it accurately. In economics growth is usually measured quarterly or annually and can be reported on in either manner.

Ahhhhh, OK, so the sentence should read something like:

"According to a report by the Yunnan Bureau of Statistics, over the last year the province's economy grew by 10.8 percent by the end of the first quarter."

Otherwise its entirely confusing as the sentence clearly states a 10.8% growth rate for one quarter.

"According to a report by the Yunnan Bureau of Statistics, the province's economy grew by 10.8 percent in the first quarter of this year."

Huh? That means Yunnan economy would expect to grow 40% in one year??? Something tells me the annual figure has been confused with the quarterly figure as this would be virtually unprecedented growth anywhere!

Wait, so this means Xi Shan is not closed off because of the fire risk? Excellent! So many other places now have barricades to stop people heading into the local hills (Jin Dian, Changchong Shan, Qipan Shan...)

So fast, so convenient. One star off for opening before the train station stop is connected!

Wow, just wow. Possibly the best Chinese food I have had in Kunming. And in one of the nicest, traditional courtyard style restaurant I have been in. A woman dressed in traditional qi pao playing a gu zheng just adds to it.

We had okra, mushroom soup, dried beef and chou dofu. All top notch with the bill coming in at just over 250 kuai. But we could have fed 3 people for that so not too bad at about 80-90 kuai each. Not the cheapest but for the quality, it's damn good.

If you have people visiting and want to take them to a traditional Chinese style restaurant with Yunnan style food, or want a romantic night out with a gal, you can't go wrong here. Close to Green Lake (down a little alley) for a romantic walk... Just perfect.

Pretty good place for getting all your documents translated and/or notarised. Note that there are a number of notaries in the building which you can find by going up the stairs (the elevators are impossible). But you have to find the stairs to do so... go in the door, head over to the right, go up the big wide stairs which head up a floor, turn right then right again into the elevator area and right again into the stairwells. Whew!

One point off for the elevators never being available and having to hike 7-9 flights of stairs (not good if you have to go 3-4 times a day like I often did!)

This does not stop at the Jinanya hotel at Da Shang Hui as the flyers state (and is on the images tab here). They need to have another stop in the same area or else they are missing out on covering a big chunk of the city.

You can take another bus, the 919C, I believe, if you are nearby Da Shang Hui, which leaves from the bus station on HeHong Lu, nearby the Qianxing road intersection. This bus goes every hour and is white, found at the western end of the station. It is operated by a different company and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to get to the airport due to a large number of stops especially near the airport.

Great bus though if you can catch it!

Friendly people, even got to the talk to the vice consulate, who told me she had done a stint in Malaysia's Siberian Consulate!

English is spoken by some of the Chinese girls working at the desk who are pleasant to deal with. I assume they do Visa's as well but I wasn't here for a visa, this time!
