Forums > Living in Kunming > Strange light in the sky tonight

Anyone else see it? I am in the South, looked like a rocket taking off, heading straight up and leaving an illuminated bright white tail. I figure it was terrestrial in origin but the interesting thing was a plane flew straight through the tail, which means air traffic wasn't controlled around it. Very weird!

Thanks roomboy, the reason many of us don't attend HHH (having spoken to a few who were thinking about it), is that we don't like the drinking aspect of it and for me the timing isn't fabulous (I prefer early morning so I have the rest of the day) ...

See the recent thread on this:

As long as you speak OK Chinese finding a place isn't too much of a problem. It depends what you consider "a good area of kunming to live". My personal preference is out of the city nearby a river or some parks where its a bit quieter so I live in the South (and don't have to commute into town). If you have classes etc then you will want to live within a bikable/walkable distance to your university. In that case, it depends where you are working.

Foreigners live all over Kunming city and all seem to like different parts for different reasons, so "a good place to live" is highly subjective.

Yep, I have connected the facebook and twitter sites up now oldbird!

For you, living in the north, the Panlong River tracks should be a mainstay for running, I would suggest. They are open, heavily planted and next to either deserted or fairly quiet roads (well, this was the case when I was running them last year!). The eastern side of the river between Linyu Road and 004 County road are particularly nice, though the building of the bridges across the river were annoying. I suspect most of these are finished now, requiring a few road crossings, but look for small tracks people sometimes make under the bridge (there is one on the west side of the bridge under Linyu Lu which brings means you can avoid having to cross the road, it just requires jumping over a small concrete wall!).

Ha haa, Kunmingteacher, you have pedalled a classic global warming misapprehension. To see why, just like understanding climate is complex, you have to read the complex answer as to why, as stated here:www.realclimate.org/[...]

If you think about global warming logically, we are stripping forests at an amazing rate and replacing them with carbon (be it CO2 or methane) producing environments. At the same time we have created machines and electrical systems that pump billions of tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere every year combined with a massive population. Do you think changing the fundamental way a complex system operates will have zero effect? It's like claiming that going from heaps of exercise to zero exercise will have no effect on your health. Dreaming.

Cheers Geezer, dang, we are going to miss it then. I saw this one was on the 23rd last year so was hoping for similar time.

There is a line on that site you posted that says "Horse races" in Zhongdian for the 12the of June, but thats still a bit early for us, bugger.

One has to wonder if the real motivation of reintroducing rhinos is because they are running out of horn and need the population to increase in order to get more horns... I bet some poachers are salivating at the picture!

So fast, so convenient. One star off for opening before the train station stop is connected!

Wow, just wow. Possibly the best Chinese food I have had in Kunming. And in one of the nicest, traditional courtyard style restaurant I have been in. A woman dressed in traditional qi pao playing a gu zheng just adds to it.

We had okra, mushroom soup, dried beef and chou dofu. All top notch with the bill coming in at just over 250 kuai. But we could have fed 3 people for that so not too bad at about 80-90 kuai each. Not the cheapest but for the quality, it's damn good.

If you have people visiting and want to take them to a traditional Chinese style restaurant with Yunnan style food, or want a romantic night out with a gal, you can't go wrong here. Close to Green Lake (down a little alley) for a romantic walk... Just perfect.

Pretty good place for getting all your documents translated and/or notarised. Note that there are a number of notaries in the building which you can find by going up the stairs (the elevators are impossible). But you have to find the stairs to do so... go in the door, head over to the right, go up the big wide stairs which head up a floor, turn right then right again into the elevator area and right again into the stairwells. Whew!

One point off for the elevators never being available and having to hike 7-9 flights of stairs (not good if you have to go 3-4 times a day like I often did!)

This does not stop at the Jinanya hotel at Da Shang Hui as the flyers state (and is on the images tab here). They need to have another stop in the same area or else they are missing out on covering a big chunk of the city.

You can take another bus, the 919C, I believe, if you are nearby Da Shang Hui, which leaves from the bus station on HeHong Lu, nearby the Qianxing road intersection. This bus goes every hour and is white, found at the western end of the station. It is operated by a different company and takes about 1 hour 10 minutes to get to the airport due to a large number of stops especially near the airport.

Great bus though if you can catch it!

Friendly people, even got to the talk to the vice consulate, who told me she had done a stint in Malaysia's Siberian Consulate!

English is spoken by some of the Chinese girls working at the desk who are pleasant to deal with. I assume they do Visa's as well but I wasn't here for a visa, this time!
