@Geezer: root of what problem is in the USA? And it sounds to me that you're equating superior professionalism and customer service with superiority generally - but isn't even this superiority mostly a matter of those who have had more access to education vs. those who have had less? Perhaps there might be an imbalance in educational opportunities in China (duhh)?
@Laotou: thanks for your explanation of diluting - I'm not sure if I agree with you or not, but 'diluting' is a scary term when not explained. And diluting (in your terms) in some areas of China, on perhaps a less-than-even-handed, somewhat authoritarian basis, has noticeably annoyed some people, as you can tell by following the news.
...collude with the PRC is a good idea, but then protesting the rich business conglomerates that collude with (read: have overwhelming influence with) ANY government is a good idea.
@Tonyoad: seems to me the land of Taiwan belongs to the people who live on the land, like everybody else.
@Laotou: How do you know that the government of China IS the Chinese people?
Protesting the rich business conglomerates that collude with the
No - it would annoy too many people. I think it would drive even more tourists out of Thailand as well. Doubt if this is going to happen in either country....
Well - ten years down the road it could happen in many places, and anyway you can be found, if the powers that be want to find you, through your cellphone now, even if it's turned off - anybody kidnaps you, if that's what you're worrying about, will take your wristband as quickly as they'll take your cellphone.
By the way, is information control democractic? It's done in bourgeois-democratic countries by wealth-dominated control of the major media, but you can usually find the information you want if you dig deep enough. The fact that this isn't good enough doesn't mean that it gets better when you turn over the job to direct state action, under which you are likely to get arrested for digging.
When I try to get yahoo, I get a message saying the Internet gods can't be sure whether it's the authentic site or something and advise me not to go further. I'm an ignorant chicken about this and have so far not gone farther. Has anybody (without a VPN, I mean)? I'd sort of like to read my email.
Social cooperation is also hard-wired into the individuals of an innately social species such as ourselves, without which the individuals of our species would not have survived to pass on any genes..Rouseau's 'noble savage' never existed, both he and Hobbes were wrong.
There are economic issues concerning education in China for very poor communities, which obviously need a bigger share of the economic pie than they are getting. Yet China's 'socialist market economy' is increasing the overall level of economic resources within China.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.
As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.
Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

发布者Subjective reports of happiness mean something, but I'm not sure what.
Kunming smells part II: The good, the bad and the ugly
发布者You get used to it all after awhile, as most of Kunming's 7 million inhabitants surely have.

发布者@nnoble: don't follow - who or what is rotting? I can think of various candidates, but I'm not sure which one you're talking about.
