Hong Kong movies, look for those directed by Ann Hui. And in many ways I like John Woo's over-the-top Hong Kong 'choreographed violence' films better than some of those he has made in the U.S. (e.g., 'The Killer', 'Bullet in the Head' - though they won't be to everyone's taste). And Chen Kaige's films.
Nope, I haven't seen any Chinese films recently.

All the Gong Li movies and all the Zhang Yimou movies, with the exception of 'Hero' which, though beautifully made, justifies any sort of bloody imperialism as long as it 'unifies' (read: conquers) what has since become China. Ang Li is also a wonderful director. Also the director of 'City of Sadness', who made several fine films, although I can't remember his name right now.

Do O'Reilly's, never mind it's too far away. The Guinness is real, comes from Ireland and not Malaysia, despite the fact that the bar is run by a Belgian and a Frenchman. Do not bother to play around with anything called Guinness that comes in a can.

@Mandrake & your comment about avoiding Chinese universities - I think you're probably right, but then if your kid is, say, 5 now, he won't be going to university for 13 years or so, & while one may imagine the situation concerning higher education in China will be the same then as now, it will have changed to some extent, as will higher education elsewhere. Still, of course, you don't want your kid trapped into a 'Chinese education or nothing' situation.

I agree with you, laotou, although I'd modify it slightly as I think there's been a move from the attitude you describe ('goal is marriage or nothing') towards a less-serious, freer and somewhat more 'fun' attitude over the past decades, at least among many of the urban university generation. And I think the pace of this is picking up - but again, fundamentally I agree.

Social cooperation is also hard-wired into the individuals of an innately social species such as ourselves, without which the individuals of our species would not have survived to pass on any genes..Rouseau's 'noble savage' never existed, both he and Hobbes were wrong.

There are economic issues concerning education in China for very poor communities, which obviously need a bigger share of the economic pie than they are getting. Yet China's 'socialist market economy' is increasing the overall level of economic resources within China.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
