@tiger: I don't doubt you, but there are also many folks you don't get laduzi so often, and who do get it once in a while in other places. Yes, anecdotal. My guess is that it IS more common in China than in some other places, but my experience is that it's not so likely here as to discourage me from eating out, and in fact it's not been any serious problem for me here beyond the infrequent day with a bad stomach.
Had geriardia once in India, took a week or 10 days to get rid of it with meds from local doctor. It was a bit unpleasant, but neither was it terrible.

Marcus is of course right, stitching up wounds is not rocket science, even nondoctors can often do it, but then there might be concerns about facial scars if the wound is complex in some way, and I think some doctors are more careful about stitching, so that any such scar is minimized, than others are.

I have just returned from a brief trip to Jianshui and rode through about 1&1/2 hours of Miandian Township of Jianshui County. Steep hillsides, and from the road I saw the aftereffects of 3 landslides - nothing quite as dramatic as what is described here and I saw no slides which had fallen on habitations or villages, but if there had been downslope villages or houses they would have been in serious trouble.

Nice photos. Not quite clear what is meant by "of Burmese descent" - migrated into Yunnan from what is now Burma at some point? Or members of a cultural group that has been in place, on both sides of the modern border, since before the border was established?

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
