Arab food comes from Arab countries; Xinjiang is not an Arab area. Couscous is Berber food from North Africa. Kebabs are eaten in many countries (eg, Iran), not only Arab ones - you can get kebabs from numerous Hui street stalls. Arab countries are the ones where Arabic is the major language, although in North Africa many of the Berber inhabitants object to being called Arabs.

Anyway, I don't know of an Arab restaurant in Kunming, though my guess is that there may well be one somewhere.

Yes, for those who don't know the place, the DT patio is laid back and chill on a nice afternoon, while inside is right for evening shows and the usual drinking, music and associated popular absurdities of behavior. This is a good opportunity to make it all worth something, even lifesaving, for others as well as fr one's righteous thumping self. Cheap at any price.

@ ricsap: "...locals do not learn the lesson."
Of course not - in the early rush of widespread consumer prosperity and the very sudden buildup of the auto industry in China, accompanied by 'get rich' propaganda and modern advertising, it is highly unlikely that 'locals' are going to pay that much attention to opinions of relatively few foreigners who largely come from affluent societies where private auto transport has been around for a long time. It's worrying and reveals the social irresponsibility of competitive hierarchic class societies in international cultural, economic etc. competition, where wealth and status are seen as the flying rings that must be grabbed in order to achieve individualized, rather blindered 'Success'. Operates throughout the world, in many ways, with local national societies repeating the serious errors of those who seem 'ahead' of them.
Will take a lot if we are all to straighten out our heads, and frankly I don't think we will.

Damn - I meant "highly unlikely". And it's not only about relations between ethnic groups, but also relations between members of the same ethnic group.
I also question your statement about the Inquisition killing 'millions' of women, and of course the persecution wasn't only of women, 'freethinking' or otherwise.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
