Forums > Living in Kunming > A woman's view as to why men are deserting Western

Did you post the wrong link? I clicked on it and watched a thing called Turd Throwing Monkeys.
Anyway, men derive their power from controlling the great bulk of material resources of society (obviously, some men much more than others) - no excuse for that at the present state of technological development, if there ever was an excuse for it (and I think you MIGHT be able to argue that there was), and doing something about that seems not a bad tactic for feminists (who, obviously, need to see it as part of a larger picture, unless they want a split between rich/poor women etc.)
Have a feeling I'm missing something here, would be glad to have it pointed out to me.

Forums > Living in Kunming > Air Quality!!! Kunming Not So Good.

Air here used to be much better. Not too many cars then, for one thing. World needs to be in damage control mode, starting at home, as well as everywhere else - may not work, since most people don't seem to be aware of it and/or don't give a damn, while corporations and governments are into short-term bottom-line competition. We reap what we sow.

5 book printouts will be at Salvador's by Sunday night. Note that these are for those who will participate at the next book club meeting only; price will be about Y15, payable at the next meeting.
There is a Chinese translation, published by Heaven and Earth books, but I don't know where to find it.

Nice article, Ginger, and on a subject that one might not think about until, once one does, it's obvious that it should be explored.
The point about foreigners particularly applies, as you indicate, to people from milk-product-using 'western' countries and, as you indicate, it is one picked up in some southeast Asian countries as well - but foreigners from other areas will be pegged also (e.g., South Asians who use many different 'curry' spices, etc., that are not used so much in China).
And then there is the widespread smell of tobacco, noticeable primarily by those foreigners who don't use it. Baijiu has a particular smell also.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
