With the exception of people who have really significant problems with bad air, perhaps the knowledge that air quality in Kunming is not so good, compared with some (but by no means all) other places, is enough. This thread has made me aware of the fact - fine - and I've noticed it has gotten worse over the years, but it has never had any effect on my plans for the day - for how many posters is this otherwise?
I do glance at the weather reports sometimes (rain, shine, temperature) and perhaps make plans accordingly.
Comment from a longtime resident, from elsewhere, the other day: "Living in Kunming makes people pussies about the weather" - I agree, have noticed it in myself.

Seems to me the thread is a good idea.

Napoleon is right: the door is ajar - but you don't have to open it.
Would be fine to see different opinions, what's wrong with that? Strikes me as indeed useful, especially for people applying from overseas.
Note that employers may certainly exchange comments about employees/former employees - and/but they do it privately, among themselves, no?

Don't know about possible copyrights or whatever - I'd imagine there'd be no problem today - but it would be really GREAT if your copy of this very important map were available through gokunming - a real public service.

Note the similarity of the next-to-last photo to the type of composition you see in traditional sjan-shui (mountain and water) style of Chinese painting - I'll bet Rock thought of that when he set up the photo.
I don't think it's necessary to be a Western exoticist or orientalist of the old and somewhat insulting 'gosh what a wonderful thing these foreigners have managed to produce' school of thought (a bit similar to the 'wonderful minority cultures' syndrome among Han Chinese) to suggest we compare these interesting and fine photos of Dali to all the commoditized, commercialized tourist crap that has taken over Dali, and many other interesting places in Yunnan, over the past 20 years or so. 'Progress' is always just great, isn't it?

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.



Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.



Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
