Is this weird weather we've been having since the beginning of January merely some kind of local variation, or is this evidence of climate change? Would particularly like to hear from Mike4g_air, who seems to keep track of these things over time.

@daodejingster: I don't disagree with your pointing out the US imperialistic war machine, but I think it's important to remember that it exists primarily to ensure/enforce the economic-imperialist hegemony and domination of the US.
@JanJal: Right, there are no major economic resources in North Korea that the US would be willing to fight for - however, the strength of the nationalistic spinoff from the economic exploitation - carried out, increasingly, through 'free-market' globalization, on an international class basis - needs to be reinforced everywhere if it is going to be present anywhere, and thus we have modern nationalism, armed to the teeth, and all the brainwash chauvinism necessary to keep national populations in line with that economic-elitist project and the privilege, established and maintained on the basis of exploitation and the historical accidents that have permitted it. The US is not the only player in this game, but it does represent the overwhelming military force and historically (since WWII, at least) dominant player in a hegemonic game, and it wants to stay that way.
So when you go looking for rogue states and nukes and the real-world capacity for using them, it's worth looking at where they actually are. Balances of nuclear terror may have prevented WWIII in the past (your argument, not mine), but they only have to fail once. If people in the US and in other nuclear-armed states don't want nuclear proliferation, they might consider staring at home and creating conditions where they will not be the 'necessities' for the continued existence of a global, economic ruling class.
As for how all this stuff appears in the highly-manipulated media, the major part of which is owned and virtually, if not absolutely, controlled by that class - Damn!
This insanity can't go on, if we really want a long future.

@ vicar: not sure about no rules or givens, but I agree with you about religion, ethnicity or background - however, I'd add nationality, as that's the prime prejudice and control system in the world these days.

Might add class, too.

Hcamez, I get your point, I'm just saying that it is important to watch this sort of thing carefully, that's all. I know from experience that on SOME levels (perhaps not international aid on the scale required for the Philippines at present) it is entirely possible just to get together with friends and DO IT, no overhead (after all, what's stopping you?) - massive administrative organization guarantees neither efficiency nor waste, it all depends on the situation. On this score, I'd like to know the practical results of the efforts of both maeflor and jan-jan - may not be possible to know this, but the point is, after all, to make sure the job gets done, and nothing else.
And my best wishes to the present effort.

For God's sake and all that is holy may they very soon do something similar on Wenhuaxiang! Ideally they'd get rid of all the cars too, but that's a problem because people with money, rather than ordinary people, are living in the apartments there, and many of them, at least, own cars.

Modern & postmodern culture, including modern & postmodern portrayals of the past, is often merely a matter of producing something to sell to people - 'success' and 'truth' tend to mean: 'whatever makes money', and/or maintains and/or legitimizes the power of those who already have it. There is a lot of past, and it is worthwhile to figure out who is selecting the items for its present incarnations, and why they are doing so as they are.

Think of any museum - ANY museum.

Excellent idea, but is the Hong Kong Red Cross the best way to make contributions? I have no criticism to make of them but it is the case that a lot of charitable organizations spend more than perhaps they should on admin, staff salaries, etc. I really think those who are organizing this important effort should perhaps check out different possible routes for assisting those in need. My general impression is that, in the Haiti relief effort, Medicins sans frontiers (Doctors without Borders) and the Cuban medical relief effort produced particularly good results with less cash going to overhead etc.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
