@OK Geezer, you're right, although I suggest one might say 'It is NEVER what it is, but only what one thinks it is" - i.e., fuzzy thinking.
Meanwhile there are all these young women & old men trying to have Love - hey, there's another concept for ya! Also fuzzy, but probably more useful than 'race'.

@Dazzer: Excellent article.
@Napoleon: Chinese people belong to the human species. Categorizing them as a 'race', or as belonging to a 'race', or as being subdivided by 'racial' differences, reflects the nest of ambiguity and disagreement and fuzzimindedness about the concept even among the scientific community - among the nonscientists, it's usually much worse - why I say just dump the term, it's much more trouble than its analytical value warrants.
Chinese people belong to the Chinese natione-state - there's bs about nationality also, but it's clearly defined by law - which is, of course, arises nonscientifically. So, hopefully, when we don't like it anymore we can change it.

I wonder how much of an event Nadam was here, among the local Mongols, before the tourist industry decided to make it an event - Yunnan is a long way, and the local Mongols many centuries, from Mongolia.

Step in the right direction, hope all residents will play their part. This may involve convincing them of the part they have to play. The process starts at home, and with transportation choices.

Good article, with the history necessary to understand almost anything in Yunnan.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
