Forums > Study > Trump VS. The Resistance

Okay, I don't like Trump, and Resistance means something to me, but it's because my main thought is that any economico-socio-political system that can't do better than offering people a choice for Ruler like the last one is seriously busted and needs radical replacement - well, radical alteration, at least. Short of that, the planet will only suffer further disasters like the one we're embarked on now, and have been embarked on for quite a while.
As for Napoleon, I can't imagine how one can imagine that one is away from politics anywhere these days, though rock climbing and screwing perhaps come close.

Forums > Living in Kunming > New Household Registration Needs

I think I had to take my lease for my new flat when I moved in in December, haven't had to since, although I've been in & out of the country twice since then, most recently in mid-March. Registration has been a little more time-consuming recently, as police staff visited each other to figure out how to do it (used to be very simple), but all ways polite and basically unproblematic for me.

For me, 15 hours by hard sleeper on an ordinary Chinese train beats sitting economy class on a plane for 15 hours any day.

Not sure what you want, but 'sub-rooms' is simply confusing - a room is a room is a room, I've never heard of a 'sub-room', and there's no need to create a neologism here.
And no, I don't think the English language needs the term sanfangzhaobi, though you could give it alongside your translation of its meaning, since it is a standardized Chinese term for the form of the house.

I wonder how much of an event Nadam was here, among the local Mongols, before the tourist industry decided to make it an event - Yunnan is a long way, and the local Mongols many centuries, from Mongolia.

Step in the right direction, hope all residents will play their part. This may involve convincing them of the part they have to play. The process starts at home, and with transportation choices.

Good article, with the history necessary to understand almost anything in Yunnan.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
