You'll be okay - come first & you'll find your questions will be answered and make more sense after you see the scene.

La du zi is something I've had in many places, in & outside of China, including in London. The idea that 'real Yunnan food' is particularly likely to give you la du zi is, at least in my case, false - happens rather rarely, but it has happened to me (over a period of 10+ years) after eating in 'western', & western-run, restaurants in Kunming, as well as after eating in normal Kunming restaurants. Doesn't happen often. If you're getting la du zi frequently in Kunming, I think the problem might be your particular stomach, especially if you're new here. If you have a problem with spicy food, then you'll either get used to it or not - if not, don't order spicy dishes.
Laofengzi, it makes no sense to avoid all 'real Yunnan food' because there's a chance you might get the shits - there's always a chance, anywhere.
This whole thing is much exaggerated, & is not something that even crosses my mind, even in passing, when I go out to eat, which is daily.
Not at all amazing, but simply a fact of human physiology, that the human digestive tract is extremely adaptable.
You don't have to live in a bubble.

Being 'foreign' is something most people can handle, and, at least after awhile, doesn't have to lie there in the front of one's head alla time.

Maura, what kind of art & music scene are you referring to, and what kind of art classes?
Suggest you ask around Nordica & the Loft, in Kunming.
Anybody know what sort of art scene is functioning in Dali these days?

A western foreigner here who could fill you in best is Xiefei, who posts here sometimes - lots of contacts with Chinese artists over many years.

A glance at any map of Yunnan that shows the rivers clearly indicates that there are 2 not-so-little parts of Yunnan north of the Jinshajiang.

Note: I'm pretty sure this article is an April Fool's joke.

Hope the Chairman of the National Office of Internal Development was joking. Another reason to be south of where the mountains are high, with the emperor far away.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
