@Silvio: I take taxis with meters & lights. I've never had any problem with school lunches, family, friends, groceries, etc.
@hanshan: I agree with you about taxis at train/bus stations - when that happens, don't take the taxi, just walk a way up the street until you get an ordinary guy who uses the meter etc.

@Haali, Have you noticed that a public bus easily carries 40-50 people and that the pollution from the bus is not 40-50 times that of a taxi carrying one?
As for the traffic: one bus hardly congests it as much as 40-50 taxis.
Where do you get your estimate that 40-50% of Kunming's air pollution comes from buses?

I should mention that I almost never take taxis other than late at night, maybe 3-4 times a week, as I like Kunming and taking taxis all the time obviously doesn't improve the air quality any - other times I take public transportation.

I honestly never have problems with taxis - however, I do see a lot of taxis, especially at night on Wenlinjie, who simply don't turn off the flag or light right away after they pick up passengers, so that when they pass you you may think they're empty when they're not.
However, unless you people are waiting really long periods of time before you get a taxi I really doubt if all this complaint stuff is worth the trouble.
What 'clique' are you referring to?

@Yeah, it's always necessary to consider the question of yields of...what, exactly? The point of view of the individual farmer, who must live on a relatively low income, is bound to be different - understandably so - than that which might arise out of the broader concerns of those who have the privilege of being able to afford to think beyond more immediate concerns - so the farmer dumps on more chemicals, etc.

Another argument against skewed 'development' and its exaggerated economic inequalities.

@Kate: however, Chinese brand names do not necessarily mean outdated, non-environmentally-friendly technology: E-bikes? Almost as good as bicycles, of which a tremendous number are still produced in China.

My guess is that it will work, especially for tourgroups, as tourists who tour in such groups aren't too bright and tend to behave like sheep.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
