Doesn't seem to be a big deal to me either, but note that few seem to choose to have it done to themselves.

Does the kid get to vote on it? When he's young, he can't, and I'm pretty sure it's irreversible.
True about Yangshuo, but although the rock-climbing is fantastic, there are no real mountains. Yunnan has mountains.
Good bit of rock climbing, and I think some indoor wall climbing, done by some western foreigners out of Kunming. Ask at Salvador's Coffee Shop.
The Agricultural Bank of China is far from insignificant.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.
As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.
Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.
Too bourgeois.
Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
Ain't no flies on Salvador's.
Former provincial Party boss under investigation
发布者I'm not disagreeing, but ALL is a lot.
I also think it's important to look at this in terms of cause & effect - the 'culture right now', like all cultures, has reasons for being - what are they?

发布者What do you do when almost everyone is guilty?
Fearing 'commercialization', monks briefly close Jinning temple
发布者In that case, my guess is that you will have to apply for a research visa, not a simple student visa, unless you keep a rather low profile. Research permission comes with a local research assistant, and sometimes these are referred to as 'minders'.
Vietnam agrees to compensate China following May riots
发布者I think the destruction in Viet Nam was more serious. However, it's also true that many of the Chinese who suffered were Hong Kongers and Taiwanese, not Mainlanders.
History and restoration: Shaxi's Ciyin Temple
发布者Very interesting account. But wasn't the Swiss organization that was so involved in the preservation of Sideng (the main Shaxi village) also involved in the temple preservation?
