Forums > Living in Kunming > when drunk bar owners attack

Perhaps we might remember that this is about an incident in a specific bar, and that we don't even know what it is, except that it had something to do with a foreign bar owner? Before we start characterizing chinese in bars generally, or generalizing about the entire culture -which, it seems, is not even what the OP was about.

Well, unless there's a solid reliable story of some seriousness, it would be better not to mention the name of the bar. If it's not serious, then we might all remember that a lot of stupid crap happens in bars, most of which is better forgotten.

@Campo: How does giving equal voting rights to governments that control wildly different-sized populations mean that the New Development Bank will operate with 'true equality and fairness'? - what is this, we're talking about equality and fairness for... governments?? but I'll buy your general comparison with the World Bank, which is just another direct translation of global economic power into global political power.

Seems to me that's where it stands - in my opinion, the idea of GMO is not unrealistic, but the idea of releasing this stuff, with all the scary possibilities of what it could lead to, is highly irresponsible until & unless there is enough solid scientific evidence to allow good assurances that we're not being subjected to an unlivable future - and that evidence doesn't now exist.
On the other hand, the idea that some corporation (Monsanto) should be taking a cut from all of the world's future agricultural production is already about as despicable a scenario of the workings of global capitalism as I can imagine.

Year of the Goat

发布者

Seems to me it's the year of the 'yang', and that there is no stable translation of this general category word in English, or in many languages - in English we are always forced to make a choice that is only sometimes sometimes necessary in Chinese.
Categories of thought are sometimes affected differently by different languages.
Counter example: English, 'couson'; Chinese, biaomei, bioajie, biaoge, biaodi, tangmei, tangjie, tangge, tangdi.

Year of the Goat

Personally I prefer the goat, unless I'm going to eat it.

Sounds like an interesting place to visit - anybody have any ideas of what it might be like to live there?

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
