@Rocks: on price I agree, but if you like subs you won't find a Chinese equivalent, and I'm glad to know good subs are available in Kunming, though I doubt if I'll be going to Subway often as it's not near where I hang out. And as a large chain I guess it sucks up money and concentrates it in the hands of a large grey corporation - as, of course, do many others, regardless of the location of the head offices and major stockholders.

Tulips have been exported from Yunnan to the Netherlands for at least 10 years. Dutch traders.
Actually, I think it's just the bulbs that are exported.

Unless there's been some recent change that I don't know about, which I seriously doubt, Yunnan Normal does hire foreign English teachers, as do the numerous other universities in Kunming.

Get used to it to the point where it doesn't really bother you anymore. It's either going to be that or you're going to be continually annoyed.
Practical alternatives?

That thing about governments building houses for 'backward' people without sensible discussions with them first has led to the construction of houses that nobody wants to live in in other places, under different governments, too.
I agree with the final sentence.

@Peter: Why in hell do you have to go speculating that this young woman introduced gutter oil, polluted Beijing air and that her grandfather invited the Japanese? Could it possibly be that you just enjoy insulting anybody and anything Chinese?

You offend everybody, while simultaneously wasting their time.

Not quite what you'd call a jumping place, but not bad at all for rather standard US-type meals, not overly expensive, and with a really good salad bar that's cheap, or free with most dinner dishes after 5:30PM. You can get a bottle of beer or even wine if you really want to, but I've never seen anybody do it - maybe that's just to take out. Chinese Christian run, and they hire people with physical disadvantages, who are pleasant and helpful. Frequented by foreign (mostly North American) Christians and Chinese Christians - was started by a Canadian couple associated with Bless China (previously, Project Grace), who are no longer here, but no religious pressure or any of that. Steaks are nothing special, and I avoid the Korean dishes, which I've had a few times but which did not impress me.

As a shop and bakery, it's very good bread at reasonable prices, of various kinds (Y18 for a good multigrain loaf that certainly weighs well over a pound. Other stuff too, like granola and oatmeal that is local, as well as imported things, including American cornflakes and so forth, which some people seem to require.

Large portions, seriously so with the pizza, which is Brooklyn/American style, I guess. Convivial, conversational, good place to drink with good folks on both sides of the bar, especially after about 9PM.

Really good pizza and steaks. The wine machine fuddles me when I'm a bit fuddled, & seems unnecessary. Good folks on both sides of the bar.
