Wow, well there you go. The system fails because of people afraid of small change and bringing bags to take out restaurants. If this is how most people feel, the state of the world makes that much more sense to me now. Thanks for the 'toolish' insight.

I understand where all of your pessimism stems from, but come on now... embrace this new law instead of anticipating its failure. It's a pretty amazing thing to be discussed at such a high level of government let alone make a law like this. I'm presently in Dali and even the smallest of xiao mai bu on the outside of town are not giving out plastic bags. I consider that a relative success no matter what the future holds for this law.

Hey Jared, sorry you had a bad milkshake. We try to make sure that our workers understand that our milkshakes need to be thick as possible. But things obviously don't always go as we hope. If you get a milkshake at Salvador's again, make sure that you tell them no milk, or as little as possible. Cheers

Thank you for all the helpful comments. As far as a smoking and a non-smoking section goes, we have pondered the idea; but I fear that our space is too small and cramped. And I wonder if it might only add to the confusion for those not used to the idea of smoking bans.

Last year I would have said (and did say) that a smoking ban in the restaurant would not work. But a lot has changed since then. Even the cheap cross-country buses have gone no smoking and husbands with pregnant wives have learned the lesson to puff outside the house to spare their child's health.

Beijing will ban public smoking before the Olympics (afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5h_87fj70TlsV8mkXTKbPtdEOLAcg) and Shanghai will ban smoking by 2010 (www.chinacsr.com/[...] Why not get ahead of the game, as it will eventually be the same in Kunming?

Anyway, its a difficult subject from a business standpoint, so I'm hoping that some of you smokers out there who strongly disagree with a smoking ban will make their points. Much obliged.

what a shit show, eh? big thanks to gokunming and all of you for making this site a reliable place to get reasonable information. you've done a great job.

for now, both salvador's coffee house and mosaic bistro are still open. we have also put our meituan shop back up online for those of you at home wondering if you should go outside or not.

Hey all, the local farm we work with has organic Roma tomatoes in season now and if you want to pick some up we will have them available at Salvador's for 12 yuan per 500 grams. We'll also be using them in our dishes while available. Stop by if you're interested. We also still have locally soured organic yogurt, coffee and now quinoa if you are looking for some other groceries to add on. Cheers

I'm leaving this review for one of my staff. She just return from Dali and fell in love with this little restaurant in Dali. Very nice owners cooking up delicious and healthy Chinese cuisine with an open kitchen and local "organic" ingredients. I'll have to try it out myself next time.

If you're looking for a slightly higher end place serving local foods in a nice outdoor atmosphere, you'll dig this place

I'm disappointed in myself for even considering giving this place another chance. I wanted to give my 4-month old a chance to see some live animals and I was sure that there was no way that the Kunming Zoo was as bad as it was 15 years ago. Somehow it was worse. It's disgraceful that with all of the changes that this city has undergone in the last two decades that this zoo still lacks any sense of decency or morality.

At nailer and tallamerican, I'm sorry to hear about your recent experiences. We wash everything with purified water and make all of our food fresh daily from whole ingredients in order to avoid any problems. We will review our procedures to assure that we continue to provide the safest and healthiest menu options possible. I hope you'll give us another try and I'd be happy to buy you a coffee if you are around any morning.

@GoKunming, it would be nice if there was a zero star option for reviews so that business owners can contribute without having to rate ourselves. I kind of feel like a d-bag giving myself stars 1-5. For some reason I settled on 4 as the least douchey ;).
