You should really wait until you get here so you know where your work will be. There are plenty of nice stand alone house with garden in the outskirts as well as any village. I think may be best if you will be working in rural areas. I was going to buy a house and garden in Heijing but it was not possible to buy. Renting is an option though. Good luck.
What is the relevance of rent in other cities if we are here in Kunming. I have rented in other cities but it is meaningless to mention it here because the OP is asking about Kunming.
I have been to PZH 6 times over the last 11 years. I visited one time in August and the remaining 5 times were in November and December. Yes, there is a big difference here during these months. The 5 times I went in November and December, I was literally the only person on the boat and I had the entire lake to myself. June to August (Peak) are the worst months to visit. Also, I never buy the ticekts because the price is ridiculous. I have seen the ticket prices increase from 50, to 60, to 100, and finally to 200 Yuan over the years. I really dont think the boat ride is worth 200 Yuan.
The new Visa office is located at 118 Tuo Dong Road. There is no number on the building yet so do not bother to look for it. There are 2 passport photo shops on either side of the building. The office is located directly in front of the Kunming Museum. The bus stop is named - Shi Bo Wu Guan - Bus 1, 62, 109, 117, 145, 213, A1 and K3 stop directly in front of the office. Foreigners need to go to the 3rd floor. The Tuo Dong Stadium is located to the right of the office while Baita Road is located to the left of the office.
