Here is a list of Yi minorities and their locations. As you can see, the list quite extensive. At closer inspection you will notice that the list has been broken down by province and prefecture but it does not clearly state which type of Yi is found in each county. You can use the sort button on top of the list.

Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture
Chuxiong city
Dayao county
Lufeng county
Mouding county
Nanhua county
Shuangbai county
Wuding county
Yaoan county
Yongren county
Yuanmou county

I must admit I am very curious about this now and I will make some inquiries about those symbols during my travels. I found a picture of the houses I took a few years back and I can see the circular symbols you are talking about.

My wife is from Shandong and that is the solar capital of China. They make all sorts of solar stuff including cars. After I visited there we tried to get a solar/elec car and bring it to KMG but when we inquired here they are NOT allowed. Lets see if this chnages the rules here so we can get our own and not have to buy the only one they offer from Hangzhou.

The new Visa office is located at 118 Tuo Dong Road. There is no number on the building yet so do not bother to look for it. There are 2 passport photo shops on either side of the building. The office is located directly in front of the Kunming Museum. The bus stop is named - Shi Bo Wu Guan - Bus 1, 62, 109, 117, 145, 213, A1 and K3 stop directly in front of the office. Foreigners need to go to the 3rd floor. The Tuo Dong Stadium is located to the right of the office while Baita Road is located to the left of the office.
