“The true value of a human being is determined primarily by the measure and the sense in which he has attained liberation from the self.”

-Albert Einstein, 1934

16 years later, Einstein goes on to say in ways similar to the teachings of Buddhism...

“A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest—a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. The striving to free oneself from this delusion is the one issue of true religion. Not to nourish it but to try to overcome it is the way to reach the attainable measure of peace of mind.”

@ksmcqueen

Are you just about done name-dropping? ;)

Another film adaptation from Amy Tan's novel The Joy Luck Club also seemed to play up racial stereotypes of Western mainstream whilst embody a potluck of authenticity. The inescapable duality of 1st & 2nd generation immigrants.

That 1993 film deserves more trailblazing recognition for Chinese Americans than the over-hyped Crazy Rich Asians.

Better Luck Tomorrow (2002) was another "Asian representation" film that passed the torch, albeit dim to the point of dousing. Unfortunately, the low income plot didn't captivate audiences with eye candy glitz.

Hollywood films marketed as an "all-Asian cast" would've suffered weak box office in the past, let alone top it for two straight weekends.

I say enjoy this one-off while it lasts.

When in Rome...

More tech savvy locals would post their rentals on Mayiduanzu (蚂蚁短租,or Ant Short-term Rent):

www.mayi.com/[...]

Everything is negotiable, like most things in life. It helps to read/speak Chinese. No agent fees via this platform. Airbnb is also gaining traction in China. The sublet apartment hotel (酒店公寓) fad is booming.

300 meters, not 3km of damaged bikes:

Btw, two of the wealthiest CEOs in China have already invested in these companies. Alibaba is one of the lead investors in Ofo, while Tencent in Mobike. They are here to stay.

Years before these startups began, UBikes were proven to be a success in Taipei. These Chinese counterparts reversed engineered them into dockless shared bikes, which IMO are much more convenient for riders, albeit "tragedy of the commons" in the mainland ensued as expected.

via Google:

"Gray wolf weight varies geographically; on average, European wolves may weigh 38.5 kg (85 lb), North American wolves 36 kg (79 lb) and Indian and Arabian wolves 25 kg (55 lb). Females in any given wolf population typically weigh 5–10 lb (2.3–4.5 kg) less than males."

Okay, so these prehistoric otters are more massive... especially compared to the wolves (Canidae lineage) of the Miocene era:

@dolphin

Different epochs I presume. T-rex dinosaurs roamed the earth 60 million years before these giant otters.

"Bigger and more powerful than wolves?" WTF?! Look at that ferocious set of cutlery. So much for cuteness.

Just saw a Youtube video of a pack of tiny, adorable otters trying to take down a zoo keeper. Vestigial predatory instincts on full display.
