you'll find it very difficult (if not impossible) to get any sort of loan or mortgage at the moment. have you thought of sharing the rent with others in a similar situation? i'm not sure if you can buy property without a residence permit... maybe someone else can help with that.

aiyaryarr,
justice is subjective. people will obviously prefer to see themselves as the good guys. let's not mention that 'Colonialism can be equated with slavery'... someone might bring up the Tibet issue.

it's funny that you say that its the HK people who have issues with their history. i have a number of HK friends (of various ages and backgrounds) and they're just happy to be part of that great and multicultural society. even when i've questioned some of them on the issue, they really couldn't care less. they have a great country (or SAR if you like) and are certainly not living in the "stinking, mosquito- infested swamp" that HK (in particular the area now known as Happy Valley) was up until the British arrived.

if you're unable to debate with people holding an opinion different from your own then you will understandably feel like you are "pissing against the wind".

back on topic, Gaoxing was an idiot when he was in kunming and little appears to have changed. Gaoxing, if you even cared about this amazing girl and were so kindly taken in by her family, why aren't you still with her?!

it seems to me that the majority of the various groups in HK get along pretty well considering. it's only a relatively small number of mainland Chinese and a few 'patriotic' (nationalist) 'overseas-born Chinese' that appear to have issues with the history of the territory. lets be honest here, HK has done pretty well... no doubt there was a class system based on ethnicity but HK now has things such as roads, education, an excellent public transport system, an economy, a vibrant culture which reflects its diverse population and much more. the only glitch worth mentioning in recent history was the the economic crisis and mass exodus around the time of the handover where many talented individuals fled, fearing mainland rule.

hi,
i don't have a family here so i can't really comment on your likely monthly expenditure. i would guess at around 5-6000 for a modest lifestyle. private school fees and eating lots of western food would obviously increase this amount significantly.

if you're looking to open another restaurant, there is a place on Wenlin Jie for sale at the moment. i'll PM you. other than that, many people take english teaching jobs but i guess that wouldn't be your first choice.

why not visit KM for a week or so first? it's very cold here at the moment (houses in kunming don't have heating either) so it might not be the best time. it's really completely different from shanghai... much less developed in every way but people like living here... i do.

taxi drivers (ebike/motorbike/licensed/Didi) seem to hate the competition from these bikes and have been known to 'move' them or otherwise make them unusable. I've witnessed some shop owners moving the bikes from near their store front. I've also seen several local xiaoqu guards and city management officers piling them up recently. There were always quite a few within eyesight of my apartment but not any more... I now need to walk around to find one which negates the whole idea in my opinion. At least one of these companies have to fold soon.

The only place worth going for a beer in Lijiang. Small place with a super friendly vibe. Great relaxed hangout for locals and travellers alike.

a lovely place to stay with great views of Yulong xueshan (JadeDragon snow mountain) from the roof! Beautifully decorated and hosts that make you feel like family. A million miles better than most other places locally. I can't recommend this place enough.

i thought i'd give this place another try as my usual place was closed today. even though there is now more choice, i was not impressed by the menu. they do have an apparently good range of coffees for up to 80 kuai but even a basic latte is Y26 now. the drinks were OK but nothing special and certainly not worth the money. the place looked somehow cleaner too and was certainly busier! why have so many of the cafes in this area decided that it's fine to raise their prices by so much (in some cases almost double)? i doubt i'll be going back. the 2 stars are because it was just OK and they've obviously made some effort.

not a bad selection of stuff and some of the staff obviously know their way around a bike. however, the 'special' prices for foreigners and the fact that some of the staff will use a big hammer to fix anything keeps me from going back. you could do better.

I won't go there again. The yoghurt is tasty and the curries are usually ok (they seem to vary in quality depending on the day and time). What really annoys me is the fact that they can't comprehend that I order dishes to eat TOGETHER... if my curry arrives 30 minutes after all the other dishes it's not really acceptable. Then again, neither is the 1 hour wait for the rest of the food or the incorrect dishes being sent. By the way, why can't I sit on the 3rd floor until both of the other floors are packed full? Has it never occurred to them that I might want a quiet meal and, after all, I am paying for it!
