'alcohol plays almost no role in society here'. Every convenience shop sells a variety of alcohol. Most restaurants too. Business dinners, weddings etc involve extreme binge drinking. In every city on every night of the week there are groups of people playing drinking games until they can barely stand, you will see people legless and vomiting at as early as 8pm. All this in the south of China which has a far smaller drinking culture. Go to a northern city and tell me alcohol plays no role in society.
Yeh, ship your bike if you have one in Beijing. Motorbikes are fine outside the second ring road in Kunming, at least that was the rule years ago and I haven't heard that it's changed. Lots of motorbikes ride past my place every day. I have to say I'm a bit jealous, cos I don't have a motorbike license!
yeh in China golf courses are strictly for the rich and their trainers. Even when you have paid your 300-400k for clubhouse membership, the green fees still cost about 300 a pop!
there used to be one next to Nanya shopping mall (enter next to the petrol station and burger king/gym, haven't been there for ages so don't know if it's still there.
Fined? Shut down? When will people realise that if the punishment is not as bad as the crime then people will keep offending? Get the abused kids to testify and put the cu*** in jail for their various crimes, or better still, make them work in the conditions they made the kids work in for a few years for no pay, with the kids as their bosses.
Really good idea which may improve some people's health and fitness and save them quite a bit of money. It works quite well in Hangzhou.
@Alien, the idea is that you return the bikes at the nearest station to your home/destination. Of course with only 500 stations planned there will be a lot of places where you still have to walk several hundred metres to get home. Users have to decide if that is worth 15rmb.
Big fuss about this and yet people leaving their car engines on while parked, smoking in public places including enclosed ones like lifts, throwing litter on the ground or into rivers all go unnoticed, and not cared about. Note: most of the offenders of these other environmental/health misdeeds are men. Cloud is right.

We have to destroy some habitats to support human life, but we must keep some areas where animals and insects can live undisturbed by humans. The good news is that there is still quite a lot of wilderness. The bad news is that we have been disturbing at an incredible rate for the best part of a century.
a very pleasant park with a tall pagoda you can climb and take photos of the city if you wish. Roses in summer, blossom in spring, nice lawn to sit on, bbq areas.
Recently the food seems to be better. Decent steak at a decent price, decent pizza, some decent wine, and the music is more suitable these days (Rammenstein wasn't the right mood music for Cantina)!
Had lunch - grilled chicken on top of mashed cuttlefish and a salad. The chicken was tasty and well cooked, and there was plenty of meat/fish to fill up even a hungry person. The salad was overdressed and nothing special - I won't order one next time. The service is a decent imitation of what you might find in the west. A large menu of food and drink. A nice civilised place to go for food or drink, but some of the dishes (i.e. the steaks) are very pricey. You could easily spend 300rmb+ per person here. Equally, it is possible to have lunch for under 60rmb per person (as we did). Warning - the bottle of water on each table costs an eye watering 48rmb! Don't be a sucker by opening it!
Went for a spot of lunch. Best pizza I've had in Kunming by some distance. In fact, one of the best pizzas I've ever had - quality ingredients, thin base, cooked to perfection. Sashimi salmon tasted very fresh and was well presented. The drinks are expensive, and one of the waiters was letting the side down by being a bit scruffy and impolite (hence not 5 stars), but definitely go and try the pizza.
Not bad. Pizza base was a little thick for my taste. Great selection of craft beers in the fridge, a few beers on tap, and well priced mixed drinks and cocktails. Staff were pleasant. A 14" pizza is the perfect size for two people, and very reasonably priced at 45-70RMB. Beware that the English menu, whilst written in perfect English, is not necessarily accurate. I ordered the 'local one' pizza expecting pepperoni and mango but got neither. The waitress explained that was a mistake on the menu. Would be nice if the menu corresponded with what you get on the plate! Hopefully this will get sorted.
