Spot on Tiger. If you have a vision, you have to be brave enough to stick to it. But the key thing is not to embark on a business without thinking carefully about things like location, advertising, and every detail of how customers should be served (and just as importantly, training the staff to carry out that service plan exactly). Make a good enough product, and the people who like that product will buy it. Repeat business is the name of the restaurant game.

I went to Pho Q, the little British(?) owned Vietnamese style restaurant a while back. I thought the food wasn't bad, but I am sure that the business will fail because of its location down a little alley. Foreign customers will be pretty essential to its survival, for what local or Chinese visitor wants to pay 25 for what they see as a bowl of mixian? It struck me as the sort of restaurant which would do fine in the right location: Hong Shan Dong Lu, or Wen Lin Jie, but not hidden down an alley where no one can see it. Can anybody confirm that Pho Q is still going? I would like to go again, but don't want to make the trip to find it has shut down.

that wasn't directed at you yankee btw, it was directed at the amusing failure of a 'Persian restaurant' to serve what we would think of as Persian food. In that same place, there used to be (perhaps still is) a Thai restaurant, I had a look at the menu, but couldn't see any of what I would think of as Thai food. Something about that area perhaps...

bloody Chinese medicine. It should be illegal to prescribe any substance taken from a wild animal, with long jail sentences for those who persist in doing so. For endangered animals the sentences should be even longer.

If they think that a bit of chlorine is going to prevent bird flu, they are very naive. People are also very naive to deliberately come into contact with these birds through feeding them etc, though I have to say their naivety is quite endearing.

It's good that they are aware of the issue and trying to give help to women and children in need.

Seems from this article that China is basically a set of united states, each with their own laws and differing interpretations of national laws.

BTW Alien, Sweden very much sees prostitution as a form of violence against women. Only the customers are treated as perpetrators. Not sure how far I agree with this perspective, but I definitely see where they are coming from.

In China I frequently see women hitting or kicking men in public, perhaps there should be a a service for abused men too!

So they are going to try to give them back to their parents who didn't want them or felt they were too poor to give them a good life? Everybody suffers in this scenario - the kids grow up either with parents who don't want them or as orphans, the parents get shamed by their community, and the traffickers do long prison sentences, when actually they were just profiting from providing a service that there is clearly a big demand for. Clearly legal adoption needs to be made quicker and easier for parents who can't have their own children but who really want them so that desperate wannabe parents don't resort to buying kids on the black market.

a very pleasant park with a tall pagoda you can climb and take photos of the city if you wish. Roses in summer, blossom in spring, nice lawn to sit on, bbq areas.

Recently the food seems to be better. Decent steak at a decent price, decent pizza, some decent wine, and the music is more suitable these days (Rammenstein wasn't the right mood music for Cantina)!

Had lunch - grilled chicken on top of mashed cuttlefish and a salad. The chicken was tasty and well cooked, and there was plenty of meat/fish to fill up even a hungry person. The salad was overdressed and nothing special - I won't order one next time. The service is a decent imitation of what you might find in the west. A large menu of food and drink. A nice civilised place to go for food or drink, but some of the dishes (i.e. the steaks) are very pricey. You could easily spend 300rmb+ per person here. Equally, it is possible to have lunch for under 60rmb per person (as we did). Warning - the bottle of water on each table costs an eye watering 48rmb! Don't be a sucker by opening it!

Went for a spot of lunch. Best pizza I've had in Kunming by some distance. In fact, one of the best pizzas I've ever had - quality ingredients, thin base, cooked to perfection. Sashimi salmon tasted very fresh and was well presented. The drinks are expensive, and one of the waiters was letting the side down by being a bit scruffy and impolite (hence not 5 stars), but definitely go and try the pizza.

Not bad. Pizza base was a little thick for my taste. Great selection of craft beers in the fridge, a few beers on tap, and well priced mixed drinks and cocktails. Staff were pleasant. A 14" pizza is the perfect size for two people, and very reasonably priced at 45-70RMB. Beware that the English menu, whilst written in perfect English, is not necessarily accurate. I ordered the 'local one' pizza expecting pepperoni and mango but got neither. The waitress explained that was a mistake on the menu. Would be nice if the menu corresponded with what you get on the plate! Hopefully this will get sorted.
