To make you guys feel better:
In the UK my teacher salary was £1791 per month (add a 0 for a rough conversion to RMB). After tax it was about £1500. I would normally work about 60 hours a week, many of which at home in my 'time off' so I had hardly any life outside work, which was miserable. That's £6.25 per hour (if we take a month as 4 weeks, of course its slightly longer). 63rmb per hour for an incredibly stressful and tiring job. Here at my training school I get paid about £1000 per month with no deductions, and get small quarterly bonuses and large yearly bonuses. I work about 20 hours a week, with a bit of extra time before and between classes, but its no more than 30 hours total in work. The job itself can be quite fun, and is not particularly stressful. It works out about 124rmb per hour of actual work not including bonuses. So, almost double the hourly pay, and my rent costs only 30% of what it did in England for an apartment twice as big and twice as nice. So, I feel better off mentally, physically, and financially. Of course, the school makes way more money out of me than I do them, but that is capitalism. The Chinese staff at our school is another story, they work longer hours for much less pay and have their pay docked at every opportunity. Not coincidentally, they have a high turnover rate and some of their English is pretty bad considering they are English teachers. The ones with good English leave fast once they realise how bad their deal is.
good point nnoble, China has more adults than kids, they just need to hire more teachers. I'm sure there would be takers - its a stable ish job and quite well respected, and though not highly paid officially, the hong baos must add up. If they say they don't have enough money, I would point them in the direction of the many HUGELY expensive infrastructure projects they are doing. Cancel just one, and that will pay for the extra teachers. There's no better investment than children's education.
Really? Iraq invasion was 2003! They were planning it before they even did Afghanistan? If what you say is true, no wonder you quit!
what's the difference between riding a domesticated horse and a domesticated elephant? If anything, the elephant is so much bigger and stronger than a horse so riding it is less of an issue, they probably barely feel a couple of medium sized humans

a very pleasant park with a tall pagoda you can climb and take photos of the city if you wish. Roses in summer, blossom in spring, nice lawn to sit on, bbq areas.
Recently the food seems to be better. Decent steak at a decent price, decent pizza, some decent wine, and the music is more suitable these days (Rammenstein wasn't the right mood music for Cantina)!
Had lunch - grilled chicken on top of mashed cuttlefish and a salad. The chicken was tasty and well cooked, and there was plenty of meat/fish to fill up even a hungry person. The salad was overdressed and nothing special - I won't order one next time. The service is a decent imitation of what you might find in the west. A large menu of food and drink. A nice civilised place to go for food or drink, but some of the dishes (i.e. the steaks) are very pricey. You could easily spend 300rmb+ per person here. Equally, it is possible to have lunch for under 60rmb per person (as we did). Warning - the bottle of water on each table costs an eye watering 48rmb! Don't be a sucker by opening it!
Went for a spot of lunch. Best pizza I've had in Kunming by some distance. In fact, one of the best pizzas I've ever had - quality ingredients, thin base, cooked to perfection. Sashimi salmon tasted very fresh and was well presented. The drinks are expensive, and one of the waiters was letting the side down by being a bit scruffy and impolite (hence not 5 stars), but definitely go and try the pizza.
Not bad. Pizza base was a little thick for my taste. Great selection of craft beers in the fridge, a few beers on tap, and well priced mixed drinks and cocktails. Staff were pleasant. A 14" pizza is the perfect size for two people, and very reasonably priced at 45-70RMB. Beware that the English menu, whilst written in perfect English, is not necessarily accurate. I ordered the 'local one' pizza expecting pepperoni and mango but got neither. The waitress explained that was a mistake on the menu. Would be nice if the menu corresponded with what you get on the plate! Hopefully this will get sorted.
Forecast for Kunming's next subway line: Wait and see
发布者Alex and Alien - I think you have the 2014 attacks to thank for that - they built the subway planning to use the south entrance, then decided for security reasons to have everyone enter through the north side. I agree that it totally sucks, having to walk for what seems like miles with your bags around the outside of the station.
Yunnan reveals extensive four-year aviation plan
发布者indeed, Geezer. What is needed is better use of the facilities already available. Kunming has a direct flight to Paris, great, but it's only twice a week so not that useful unless you are a flexible flier. If it was every other day, that would be more useful.
