tigertiger, free-market economy is not quite the same as capitalism, and it's correct to say it was born in England during the industrial revolution. In fact I've heard someplace that the very word "Economy" was first used by Adam Smith in "The Wealth of Nations" in 1776 - recommended reading for anyone interested in the ties between finance, justice, and logic, as is "The ascent of Money" by Niall Ferguson. One of those is my favorite book, not sure which:)
Directed to the foreign English teachers who give out this kind of homework to the kids: may I suggest that you instead invite some foreigners (i.e people you yourself know) to the classroom for a supervised interview?
As a parent, I do care about children's education. I'm paying for it, after all.
If there is some reasoning behind this which contributes to the language-learning curve, I'd like to understand what. Right now it just seems dangerous and pointless. A Portugese student was raped in my hometown some years ago after being given the task of interviewing some locals, having been invited home by someone to finish the interview "in comfort".
From a pedagogic point of view, what is the reason for this homework?

In fact I did not read about employees(?) forced(?) to crawl on hands and knees around a main square - sounds like some kind of promotion? What was your point actually - what is offensive in this story? were they underpaid? Was it outside of working hours (i.e. they were not employed, but rather enslaved)? Is the task offensive? Look, I KINDA know where you're coming from, but still not quite there. All around the western countries people are paid to wear ridiculous signs in main streets, stand all way holding a big arrow pointing to some nearby business, etc. However there's a contradiction in terms here regarding "Employees being forced" and I just cant get my head around it. Anyway, yes, the one who pays the piper should get to call the tune. It's a quote from Malcolm X by the way, but I guess he got it from someplace else coz I'm not aware of many pipers in Harlem :)

been there several times, very satisfied every time. menu has classics like fish n chips, bolognese, pizzas etc. very tasty, at good prices.
Friendly staff and good service, food and prices are ok. No complaints but its nothing special either, and not worth a visit unless you live closeby.
Nice atmosphere and cosy but the western food is bad. I think they deep-fry the burgers. As a cafe - 4 stars (service is a little bit lacking at times), coffee and cakes etc are good. As a restaurant, 2 stars (western food is too bad, asian food is mamahuhu).
"All the Meat" only had about 3 slices of salami on it, so maybe i got the wrong order. Anyway, leaving that aside - soggy bread, ketchup as tomatosauce, and cheese was probably from a tube.
Potato wedges soggy as well.
I left half my meal, the only thing up to scratch was the coke and the service. Will not be back.
If the name of the shop is written in english then they should speak english, yes! A pokey shithole trying to give the impression of a quaint li'l ole bookshop. Pig-ignorant staff, never been greeted with a smile there, nor even greeted. If you must shop here, bring your own bag. 1 star earned for selection and the (for me) convenient location.

Certainly looks like the Great Britain events are being boycotted by the local britons...seems to me a bad sign if they cant even try to build relations with their own landsmen and women.

About tcm vs western drugs. Have any of you seen the VOLUME of tcm drugs people get? People are literally filling shopping bags at the tcm pharmacies.
As for western meds - i saw a docu which showed that for several drugs, the capsule itself was more beneficial tjan the actual drug inside :) Point 2 about western drugs: theres up to 6000% difference between the cost to produce and the price on the shelf. Whacked out.

Plenty of curiosity items, nostalgia, fakes, practical household items, bikes and e-bikes, tools, clothing, furniture etc. I was looking for a cheap portable DVD player but though there were plenty available, they were at best "last years model" ie too bulky.
Easy to spend a half day here, i dont feel like i got treated as a rich laowai i.e. first prices quoted were not outlandish, and the only problem was a lack of food options. Also - little or no putonghua here.
I disagree with the article on two points: 1. Its very taxi-friendly, or at least not worse than anyplace else i've been. Lots of empty taxis pass by (if you walk to the road, of course) 2.i thought it very easy to find and is on google maps.
