Forums > Travel Yunnan > Camping around Yunnan Province

In addition to what Geogramatt said:
Yunnan is frequently plagued by bush fires. After a rather wet 2013 and a strong winter which caused many leaves to freeze off the landscape is covered in dead leaves. This is a potential fire hazard. Don't cause fires yourself and don't get caught in a brush fire while camping. At several places, especially around Kunming there are fire watch men at strategic spots to watch for fires. I would not recommend camping wild in those area.

Forums > Travel Yunnan > Bus to Dali - Update?

The problem with busses to Dali is that there are some really crazy drivers who do the trip of 340 Km (Dali old Town) to Kunming West bus station) in less than 4 hours. That includes a stop at the very filthy Shaqiao bus stop. You don't have to understand that these busses drive well above the safe speed for which they are designed. Unless you know which busses are safe I would not take them.
I recommend everybody to take the train which is more interesting and safer and even much cheaper. (The city bus from Xiaguan to Dali Old town is 1 RMB. Train last time I took it 64 RMB)

Forums > Living in Kunming > European MEDICINE

As a former medical supply and pharmaceuticals purchaser I like to add my 5 cents of information.
Vitamins first of all are not medicines most of the time but food supplements and it is questionable if health people eating a varied diet need any additional.
Geezers Vit-C of 1000 Mg is 10 times the recommended daily dose so anyway a waste of money. As a food supplement even 50 Mg should be more than enough.
Everywhere in the world including China there is a misconception that medicines have to be expensive to be good. Pharmaceutical companies play on this and with a bit of extra advertisement sell stuff far above the price. The world market price of Vit-C is about 3 USD per Kilo. After tabletting and packing the stuff and some additional cost the price does not have to be higher than double that in resale. In reality it is a multifold with most suppliers.
If you enter any pharmacy you will be first confronted with the expensive stuff. It will be located a premium location in the store at eye height (The suppliers even pay for that). And well you pay for that and go home with quarter full jars with expensive packaging. If you go to the corner of the store and go through your knees you will find small (But nearly fully packed) small plastic cups with a simple label stating Vit-C. They usually come in 100 tab 100 Mg packaging. Cost: 1.8 to 2 RMB per packaging. (Cost per Kg thus 180 to 200 RMB). You yearly need at a tab per day is 365 tabs thus less than 8 RMB.
FYI. Nearly all Vit-C is made in China (Even the process for making it is Chinese). So most likely if you buy Vit-C in the USA the stuff comes from China.

The asperin tabs you talk about of 40 Mg are intended for blood thinning for patients with hard problems. 40 to 80 Mg is the right dose for that.

Tylenol is an American brand. The active ingredient is Paracetamol. Paracetamol tabs are cheaper than Tylenol also it is thus the same thing.

I largely agree with you that it is not the dog but the owner that is the problem. But you have to realize that there is a correlation between them, like people that buy a Lamborghini are more likely to be involved in a high speed accident than people who buy a QQ.
The problem is that people that, let say, buy a pit bull terrier, usually are not doing so to prove that these are nice family dogs but do so for the reasons why these dogs are forbidden now.

An other point is that certain breeds which where OK before, like for example the various shepherd breeds, for whom I have as well have good experiences, I was allowed to walk a friend's shepherd when only 4 years old, have changed.
Many of these dogs are not any longer what they used to be. This because of unscrupulous breeding for commercial reasons. The nice and friendly shepherd I walked as a 4 year old is not the same as the shepherd my neighbor bought as a status symbol to go with his Cayenne.
For this reason I support banning breeds. Not because of the dogs but because of the owners.

Dognappig
Kidnapping of a dog in our compound occurred yesterday. The dog was lured outside with a ham sausage and then taken off the compound. Security camera's showed all the action even of the kidnapping lady buying the ham sausage in the convenience store next to the compound.
The dog involved was an Akita, which is one of the forbidden dog breeds in Kunming. Apparently there still is a market for these dogs.

When I read the header I thought that is fast because last night the just visited me. Turned out the article is about the previous census ;-)
