The Mi le hot springs are nice. Food is good, try the Yi Liang duck on the way. There is also a big Buddha to visit just outside the city.

Most taxi drivers should also know the police place and there is a sign that you can see once you walk into the alley.

the other point is that if you get in any serious trouble in China then only the Embassy of the passport you entered China on can offer consular assistance.

I renewed my Chinese drivers licence last year, its quite easy, go to the traffic police centre on RenMinLu (in the alley opposite the main enterance to Yi Ke Da Xue),,they are open Monday to Friday, closed 12-2 for lunch

Bring your passport and a photo copy,

Current Chinese Drivers licence and photocopy

1. As you walk in the main door of the Traffic Police compound the is a two floor office on the left, go to the second floor and get your photos and medical test done.

2. Walk furthur into the compound and with all the above docs you can extend the licence, it costs about 50rmb (medical tests, photos, extension)

The one expense that you should not forget is to have medical insuarance. Most expats (or locals) can tell you that apart from education and buying an apartment the biggest expense you may have is hospital bills. If you have to use the hospital system here for anything other than very simple things you will find it's very expensive. If you need to be medically evacuated out of China then budget for a 100K USD PLUS bill for the flight, which is why you need insuarance.

If you have no kids (or yourself) to educate, dont want to buy an apartment and don't include international travel or rent (this depends so much on what you level of place you want to rent) or medical insuarance in your budget then 3-5K rmb a month would allow you to have a basic western style (mainly eating western food out of home) life in Kunming.
