Forums > Living in Kunming > Air quality and massive plant death in Kunming

Long Dragon is correct about the trimming. Some trees, especially, if infested by parasites and fungus should be trimmed. Also some varieties grow back stronger branches, or a bushier canopy.

But I have my doubt that most of the blokes I see cutting the branches have the needed knowledge of trimming plants.

Most of them just seem to enjoy playing with power tools.

As I posted above, most gardeners here lack the basic green thumb to manage healthy growth of Kunming vegetation.

Climate change is happening but the few cold days in Kunming are not a sign of it. The spring city has spring weather all year around, which is not literally a spring, let's say spring like weather, @Liumingke, if you think that cold weather is not part of spring, then I invite you to come to central Europe, and enjoy the sub zero degrees in April or May. So unless you are not from Dubai or Kuwait, straight from the desert, keeping in mind that the desert at night gets close to sub zero, well we are in fact in a city of spring.

Now Kunming if I am not wrong has an elevation of 2000+ m and is in a mountainous area, and thus prone to extreme weathers and temperatures.

Another thing is that the cold wasn't that long consecutively but a lot of cold days changing with fair weather. So it may just be individual perception.

Now the most important part.
For all the dead trees, and vegetation, let's face it Kunming or most of Chinese are shitty gardeners and landscapers.

Most of the vegetation that kicked the bucket is not local. All the plants and flowers around our house is local or if not frost safe, survived and thriving in the new sun.
Also from my gardening experience, and seeing what they do to plants here, it's beyond stupidity. The plant here get drowned in water every second day, that goes for grass, trees, bushes and flowers.

Even when it was freezing outside they nimwits still drowned the plant in water. Grass is being watered at noon time in the sunshine [deadly] and then I see the 'gardeners' scratching their heads in stupor a few weeks later, wondering how the grass died. And then spraying another load of water on it just for good measure.

Most local Kunming or surrounding vegetation can handle the heat drought and cold in Kunming, and even some of the imported green friends, such as the eucalyptus tree, so if Kunming wouldn't waste so much money and water on importing and planting trees and flowers, from tropical or subtropical areas, such as Thailand or Xishaunbana, and not pumping them full of water, before cold periods, or soaking grass in water before putting it into the sun. They would actually would have a chance of survival.

From my 16 years back and forth in China, I cannot say that the weather has been surprisingly different. Sometimes more cold days, sometimes more dry periods.

But most of what we 'feel' about this place is crappy-a** management and extensive waste of water. But I have not seen a drought or a new ice-age coming to Kunming, so far everything is rather normal. And scientists also agree, that temperature fluctuations are normal, as we are close to a scheduled ice-age.

If we don't f-it up with our own little climate change production.

Cars are the least of the problem, their emissions are getting more insignificant annually, as the technology gets cleaner day by day, except Volkswagens...lol
At least concerning CO2 emissions.
But of course for your own health it would be good to get some exercise.

For saving the planet, flying is also not to bad if you put it relatively, the emissions vs. person [cargo] traveled, vs. distance per gallon, it is quite o.k. the problem is the emissions location, close to the weather producing elevation and the proximity of the atmosphere.

So the blame has to go to heavy industry, fossil fuel power plants, and ships, ships are the worst of all, and there are plenty of them. So next time when you drink your favorite imported lager, or your favourite imported cheese, keep in mind that for the trip it took, it had the same emissions of 500.000 cars /annually.

If you put SOx into the calculation then, a little over a dozen of the biggest container ships produce more SOx than all the cars on the planet.

Forums > Travel Yunnan > entrance fees in yunnan

the problem is, that most sightseeings in China feel entitled to charge a ridiculous price, for littered, nasty and mostly unspectacular sightseeings.

compare with the prices overseas it's crazy.
most sightseeings for seniors and kids are free. if not they have heavy discounts. they are clean, in good shape and nobody is trying to rip you off more after you enter.

even western tourist traps are cheaper than the normal sightseeings in china.

stoneforest entrance fee gets you on the eiffel tower, or castle neuschwanstein, or the famous bridges in venice.

the animal museum in kunming (mostly stuffed animals and a few cast bones, a live size t-rex replica) almost get's you into the louvre in paris, the deutsches museum in munich, or the museum island in berlin, anne frank house in amsterdam (or for good measure, the sex or hemp museum). you may have to add a few kuais but you get a quite a bit more to see or feeling.

i dread touristy sightseeing in china, plus most cool sightseeings in china free.

Forums > Living in Kunming > My washing machine is broken!

@fluffy
would you mind to describe the exact problem with your washing mashine? and what kind of mashine you have (front or top loader).

they aren't that scary anymore, once you take the covers off. And they are far away from complicated, unless you have a frontloader with internal heating coil.

what pain is it causing?

is there a power problem?= flickering display? nothing at all? ....could be cable, wiring,or processor issue.

is there a mechanical problem?= power is on but no movement of the drum?
you can hear the motor but no movement?
...could be the belt or fried motor, motor wiring broken or torn off.

is there a suspension problem?= UL (unbalanced load) message? any other error code?

maybe i could give a long distance cha bu duo diagnosis.

There are tons of video tutorials online,as well. The model you have may be a cooperation model with a foreign brand. google it and see if anything in english comes up, then check if there is a tutorial in english in the www.

most fixes are really cheap and even if you can't or don't dare to fix it, knowing the range of problems,- helps to not get over priced when the fixer is there.

Plus a lot if chinese medz are equally useless. I went to a pharmacy once having a migrane attack and they tried to sell me a painkiller that becomes effective after 7days. Some parents feed their kuds cild medicine for 4 weeks and praise their effectiveness...while the kids still sniffle like coked up rabbits.

Actually most western medicine is not chemical just working ingredients extracted an processed into pills and liquids. Similar to chinese medz these days. Not surprising that even the toughest western medz are almost completely natural e.g. thats cancer chemo.

If you are worried about the crap that is in western medz, then i wouldn't go chinese style.

I used a lot of TCM and the chinese medz were always at least twice as expensive as the western medz. Plus in europe you don't have to care aboyt the price tag, since you healthcare plan takes care of it.

I love people praising TCM becasue it's so mild and less aggressive than the Western counterpart.

I read about Chinese Medicine especially in Chine, it's so tainted with pollutants and pesticides that Western, including Taiwan and HK phyician rethinking the TCM products. It's so beautiful how ineducated the common Chinese person is. I had a chat with a parent that was talking nonstop about the benefits of TCM and how terrible Western medz are I told her that more than 2/3 of the TCM is highly polluted and you can't boil fry or properly wash it because it would take away the ingredients.

The areticle said the clean or npolluted one is for Export due to higher food safety standards and even then a lot is still fished out of the market.

I used both medicines in my life both I can handle quite well but I am switching to more Western Medz if needed. At least it's clean...er.
Although I love the bitter taste of TCM.

I wish Yunnan would have a better cradit/loan system, disregarding nationality. So that smaller and maybe smarter start-up's could bring new innovations and ideas and thus quality into all sorts of products and services.

As well as a more efficient and fairer taxation system for small or start up companies, like in many European states.

This province could be the innovative engine of this country. If they would try to attract through tax and loan benefits, plus that would bring more income for the state as well.
It for sure, has everything it needs from weather, location, geography, etc.
Just think about all the industries you could possibly build, and run here, (except of course ocean related industries). Ahhhhh..... just dreaming.

Sorry this probably belongs into the forum section...But just to clarify and thanks to overrated reviews I went to CC with high expectations to get some delicacies, I wanted to surprise my wife with a delicacy and there was absolutely nothing that Parkson, Metro or Carrefour don't have.I don't like Chorizo so there has to be more than just that to make me give 5 stars.Plus I already gave them 3 stars, for the very positive things I experienced. There are no products that other shops don't offer, except if their products are home made but I didn't see any labels stating it's organic or home made. For the cold cuts I found as well as the cheeses are all (or most) available at other stores.I didn't know that they make sandwiches and I will give that a try especially knowing that Sandra is involved in the making which usually leads to a yummy tummy. But again as delicacy shop it's very unimpressive and as stated before I believe it will get better. So I am not bashing it but trying to help the owners to give some ideas not just applause because I like Sandra's food...which I do.So I recommend to give realistic reviews. 5 stars just because you like one item there will just disappoint potential CC patrons that are not going for Sandwiches or Chorizo. It's a shop with tons of potential and I will come back to try the Sandwich and see what else they will have in future. But giving more than 3 stars for what I saw wouldn't be fair.

I went there and all the fake Ikea (furniture) items were almost twice as much as the originals at Ikea. The fixing guys are good but as mentioned above at least need a week or two to drill 4 holes in the wall.

The little knick knacks are ok and reasonably priced. For real furniture, I wouldn't buy there. Better and cheaper options available. But good for cheap and nice decorations and accessories.

I practiced there for a few weeks but unforntunately I had to stop, due to relocation.
It's a good school but what I didn't like was the Martial Arts blend between traditional kungfu and modern wushu, similar to the Henan one.
But I still like it for the good exercise, staff and classmates.

I am not sure if there are actually some real kungfu monks, so if you are looking for the full martial package, you might get disappointed, as almost anywhere in China.

Be aware that practice is not in the temple but in a kungfu school one block away

That said, it is in my opinion the best choice in Kunming to practice the closest to real martial arts (besides taiji). And it's very reasonably priced.
