Forums > Living in Kunming > North Korean situation

Hi guys,

Right...everybody bullying the poor nice little Kim Jong Un, destabilizing East Asia, how rude of the US to do what they have to according to the alliance treaty. And yes the exercises have been going on for literally 30years and more "Annually". And even China isn't condemning them anymore.
I'm sorry to break the news U.S. politics suck but this one is on the Kim family.

It sounds a lot to me that the US is taken far too important, mostly by Americans I guess. America is not that world leading power anymore and it's quite visible in the Korea issue.
First North Korea is the boogeyman not because geopolitical America says so but, I don't know if you just tuned in on the North Korea thing but this place is messed up for about 6 decades right now.

Even Beijing is in on it, when is the last time you had China agreeing with the United States?

I absolutely disagree with most foreign policies and politics of the US and even their addiction for unwinnable wars. Besides that, I'm sure the remake of red dawn has very little to do with political stuff. First it's a shitty movie beyond comprehension, from script to ...everything. So to put it in context with the real conflict is not a very wise decision. But a box office strategy.

Obama is doing alright but if you really want to learn how the Kimsons work there is a lot of material out showing how messed up they are.
This time actually US do quite well besides the few redneck senators screaming war.

Of course there will be no war, because nobody wants it. Usually at least one is looking for it, or somebody starts it by accident.

Forums > Study > Guandu Shaolin Temple

Hi Everybody,
I have been practicing in the Kunming Shaolin 'School' (not the temple) and I can certify that there is no traditional kungfu going on there. If I haven't been separated from the traditional practitioners, which seems unlikely, I didn't see any 'real' traditional kungfu going on.
Also I had to go to some sort of test (on temple grounds) where they wanted to test my skills and it was 100% acrobatic for the jibengong.
It is the same blend of modern and traditional kungfu, you can and will find in Shaolin/ Henan.
About the monks as well I dunno if you are aware of how the real/fake monk thing works, nor have I even got close to train with a real monk in the Kunming Shaolin temple but it seems to me very similar to the Henan version where I stayed for a bit. I dunno I might be wrong but it seems to be better than the original Shaolin but I wouldn't give it the genuine traditional stamp.
All this said, it's a fantastic place to practice, great coaches, cheap, wonderful place to get exercise, but if you are looking for more, you "MAY" get disappointed

If you can go it's a great place but similar to the flagship store in Henan, it's not the real deal.

North Korea won't "REALLY" attack anyone, besides their smaller border clashes and shelling S. Korea out of boredom and propaganda reasons. Which they need to do, to keep the warmongering Generals and hungry people busy. And history has shown how difficult handling hungry people is.
This sort of strategy is similar with China's Japan policy, keeping an artificially enhanced (natural) enemy, (while still receiving investments an know-how) to keep its people hating someone different than their own peers. (Almost) Every autocratic government is running those schemes. And so do "we", at least US & GB.

China appreciates hatred in the peninsula, but not war, as always China is not a big friend of executive decision, except if someone is not-deciding, different than China itself. lol

Plus millions of N. Koreans knocking on the door to China, shouting "gimme eat" will cut their budget for banquets, gambling trips to Vegas and Land Rovers for the hard working servants of the state. As well as it would mean that N.K. would lose the war because Russia and China have to act and they can't for 'Lil UNNY being a naughty boy.

That would jeopardize every step of progress, China and Russia has made in the last few decades. US would have a stronger influence after taking N.K., which is for sure not bringing a smiley face on the Chinese generals.
And I'm glad to see that the US-gov. is just showing the small penis complex, by sending bombers, fighter, ships a tiny (ALMOST) undetectable maritime radar systems.

Last time the US felt manhandled, they started 2 wars in Middle East. Obama is doing a great job, being civil, so far, respect!

That goes to Beijng. too. They are really showing some initiative.

Plus N.K. has a big army but without gas and food. So even if they attack S.K. or US bases they still have to bring up a following invasion or land win.

There is no gain having tanks running out of gas right after crossing the border, no matter if it's one tank or 100,000's. All socialist and ex socialist armies are massive but severely outdated, today wars are not won by masses but (probably being a wet dream of "good 'ol SUNZI") won by smarter measures, than just letting Armies of millions run towards each other with swords drawn.

N.K. will mess about for a bit, shoot a few shells, keep hating Austin, TX. for a bit longer but then go back to the negotiation table. Or being nuked, with green light from BJ and Moscow.Probably becomeing a car park for the growing Chinese car market.

that's my slightly sarcastic idea, that none will care about :)

Forums > Food & Drink > Metro again

For anyyone that isn't aware of it.
METRO is not a supermarket or superstore or however you call it these days.
It was never meant to be a store to swing by to buy a pack of salt or some crap like that.
It's a 'cash and carry' that means you swing by and buy half a pig, 100kg of fish or 20 boxes of wine, if your shopping list looks something like that, then you are right at METRO and that is why they have heavy discounts buying in large quantities.

The reason why you need a card is that a cash and carry is usually for business license holders, and you don't have to pay tax for the products you buy but instead the product will be taxed on resale. So you gain bulk discount and some value added tax as a business owner.
The usual customers in Europe are hotels F&B, and business owners. And here in China we already get the better treatment, because in Europe, if you don't have a card? -You are out, quite literally. No card, no business. So be happy that you have the option to shop at METRO China.

I have a METRO card for almost 7 years now and never had the tiniest of a problem. Maybe an overcrowded store at CNY, but Metro is hardly to be blamed for it.
They have helpful and knowledgeable staff and very good prices.
Still 'some' things are cheaper at Carrefour, especially booze. But to compare the Carrefour import section with Metro? Wow, I don't think Carrefour stands a chance.

Plus, a lot of the Carrefour wines are crap compared to wines at Metro, especially in the cheaper segment.

So far Metro did its job well .....and cheap.

Plus a lot if chinese medz are equally useless. I went to a pharmacy once having a migrane attack and they tried to sell me a painkiller that becomes effective after 7days. Some parents feed their kuds cild medicine for 4 weeks and praise their effectiveness...while the kids still sniffle like coked up rabbits.

Actually most western medicine is not chemical just working ingredients extracted an processed into pills and liquids. Similar to chinese medz these days. Not surprising that even the toughest western medz are almost completely natural e.g. thats cancer chemo.

If you are worried about the crap that is in western medz, then i wouldn't go chinese style.

I used a lot of TCM and the chinese medz were always at least twice as expensive as the western medz. Plus in europe you don't have to care aboyt the price tag, since you healthcare plan takes care of it.

I love people praising TCM becasue it's so mild and less aggressive than the Western counterpart.

I read about Chinese Medicine especially in Chine, it's so tainted with pollutants and pesticides that Western, including Taiwan and HK phyician rethinking the TCM products. It's so beautiful how ineducated the common Chinese person is. I had a chat with a parent that was talking nonstop about the benefits of TCM and how terrible Western medz are I told her that more than 2/3 of the TCM is highly polluted and you can't boil fry or properly wash it because it would take away the ingredients.

The areticle said the clean or npolluted one is for Export due to higher food safety standards and even then a lot is still fished out of the market.

I used both medicines in my life both I can handle quite well but I am switching to more Western Medz if needed. At least it's clean...er.
Although I love the bitter taste of TCM.

I wish Yunnan would have a better cradit/loan system, disregarding nationality. So that smaller and maybe smarter start-up's could bring new innovations and ideas and thus quality into all sorts of products and services.

As well as a more efficient and fairer taxation system for small or start up companies, like in many European states.

This province could be the innovative engine of this country. If they would try to attract through tax and loan benefits, plus that would bring more income for the state as well.
It for sure, has everything it needs from weather, location, geography, etc.
Just think about all the industries you could possibly build, and run here, (except of course ocean related industries). Ahhhhh..... just dreaming.

Sorry this probably belongs into the forum section...But just to clarify and thanks to overrated reviews I went to CC with high expectations to get some delicacies, I wanted to surprise my wife with a delicacy and there was absolutely nothing that Parkson, Metro or Carrefour don't have.I don't like Chorizo so there has to be more than just that to make me give 5 stars.Plus I already gave them 3 stars, for the very positive things I experienced. There are no products that other shops don't offer, except if their products are home made but I didn't see any labels stating it's organic or home made. For the cold cuts I found as well as the cheeses are all (or most) available at other stores.I didn't know that they make sandwiches and I will give that a try especially knowing that Sandra is involved in the making which usually leads to a yummy tummy. But again as delicacy shop it's very unimpressive and as stated before I believe it will get better. So I am not bashing it but trying to help the owners to give some ideas not just applause because I like Sandra's food...which I do.So I recommend to give realistic reviews. 5 stars just because you like one item there will just disappoint potential CC patrons that are not going for Sandwiches or Chorizo. It's a shop with tons of potential and I will come back to try the Sandwich and see what else they will have in future. But giving more than 3 stars for what I saw wouldn't be fair.

I went there and all the fake Ikea (furniture) items were almost twice as much as the originals at Ikea. The fixing guys are good but as mentioned above at least need a week or two to drill 4 holes in the wall.

The little knick knacks are ok and reasonably priced. For real furniture, I wouldn't buy there. Better and cheaper options available. But good for cheap and nice decorations and accessories.

I practiced there for a few weeks but unforntunately I had to stop, due to relocation.
It's a good school but what I didn't like was the Martial Arts blend between traditional kungfu and modern wushu, similar to the Henan one.
But I still like it for the good exercise, staff and classmates.

I am not sure if there are actually some real kungfu monks, so if you are looking for the full martial package, you might get disappointed, as almost anywhere in China.

Be aware that practice is not in the temple but in a kungfu school one block away

That said, it is in my opinion the best choice in Kunming to practice the closest to real martial arts (besides taiji). And it's very reasonably priced.
