Forums > Living in Kunming > From student visa to business visa... @Tigertiger
What you said about the business Visa is not completely accurate, the busines visa is not only for business it has a range of purposes, exhibitions, business starting up a company, research, etc.
And you only need to go through all that business paperwork if you are here on business for an expat company. Plus it is not illegal to get it set up in HK through an agent, well most agents, I got it in HK and the only thing it saved me was time. I had to get all the documents you would need being in your home country.
Plus half of the Work Visas here are illegal, since only very few comapanies are allowed to (100%legal=no guanxi permits) get the Z Visas.
About the work visa, it was possible to get it in kunming prior to July 1st, before the whole Visa regulation thingy changed again. A friend of mine did it last year. But if it is still possible, I can't say. Although somebody here should know, I assume.
Forums > Study > snowden is so cool @ bjtokm
Sure the chinese girls can love him as much as they like and compared to their usual hero e.g. vitas and kenny G, I have to agree Snowden is a sexy little rockstar. lol
Forums > Study > snowden is so cool Snowden isn't that cool.
Sure it's great to know (officially) that we are alled spied upon but really. How shocking are the news really. Everyone that lives in China can only yawn at what the US and UK do. China just built the most powerful computer in the world. What do you think they will use it for? Fighting poverty, corruption, world hunger and disease?
Snowden is already overexaggerating, if you watch other news than the U.S. news coverage (opinionated) and switch to European coverage (more factual) you will hear some experts that will tell you that it is impossible to store the sheer amount of date for the time and population Snowden has claimed.
Everyone that uses facebook and being shocked, i recommend read the license agreement when you register then you already know.
Snowden is whistleblower on a whistle that is already audible for a long time. I appreciate his effort but I wouldn;t call him a hero.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Kunming taxis @noble,
In a normal shop there is a set price, in a cab that would be the meter. So if the meter is off there is no price agreement, becasue if the meter is off, the driver breaks the regulation.
There is no rationlizing. The Taxi companies know the problem and the frustration and since their inner management can't reach then well enough they offer this to keep customers happy and save their reputation .
If it is such a terrible thing, then why do the CEO's and offices put that rule into action.
As customer you are on the right side of the law and ethics when you are being refused. Which you are if a driver tells you 'no-go' if the meter is on.
If you let him go by insiting on the meter, you are complying.
If you take the ride after what you call 'agreeing', out of desperation. You are complying.
Let me overdramatize a little, by using extreme examples of what would be agrements according to your theory: a confession by torture is agreed on and treated as real confession. Or to pay 5000US$ for bottle of water in the Sahara to the man who dies of thirst, is an agreed upon price.
In these cases you could argue, besides the overexaggeration, that they are unethical. Which ...well they are, but hey they are just to visualize this.
In the Taxi case there are rules specifically made for this and those drivers.
The cab company specifically states if the meter is off you can and should refuse the payment, to teach the drivers a lesson and to make sure that there is contorl over the price and practice.
They want 'you' the customer to do it.
Bad cabbies hurt the company, the customer and the image of the city, hence the forum post.
So even if you step in the cab with the hope of not paying by the meter not being used, it is still totally ok, becasue it is the responsibility of the driver to use the meter.
Forums > Living in Kunming > Kunming taxis @noble
You are not made an offer you are forced to take the lead of the cabbie by agreeing to run without the meter (breach of company reg.), if not the driver refuses to take you, (breach of company reg.).
So in order to use the service as supposed to and pay for, you have to break the rules yourself by complying with it.
Since we are talking about crime commiting rule breaking, it's equally bad since you become an accomplice. CAMPO's and my behaviour is the recommended behavior by their employers. So you can call it whatever you want it is legals and ethically totally ok.
As the saying goes :"Try to steal from a thief".
Plus I don't enter the cabs waiting for them to give me the no meter routine. If I step in and they flip the meter I have my nice chat with them and if they do well even tip them. So entrapment is something different i assume.
The forum won't change the taxi driver behavior directly but it might change the ideas and opinions of the people that have to deal with the drivers and thanks to CAMPO know more about their rights, and that did it e.g. in Beijing after the ministry of transportation got mad at the practices there. The Netizens did the rest. So Everyone, jia you!
@noble 2.0
The supervisor support dos suck often and the TV idea is very good and I hope HFCAMPO will be on TV busting things that suck about Chinese or at least Kunming society. And I think a foreigner leading the example about things most Chinese are pissed off about, will give the right incentive as well.
So thanks for the idea....I like it!
@abcd
Yep i think you have to go hidden camera. They have that on most chinese programs. When they have hidden camera reporters exposing people doing bad stuff and cheating on big and smaller scales.
I love that program, not that I watch it a lot. But it's good to know that some people out there trying to change things.
The only thing I can wish for is more programs to show when people did good things and get rewardes and put in the spotlight, some positive to balance the negative.
Kunming trees and utilities still suffering from January cold
发布者@alien
If done right, it can help the trees.
Some old garden hacks even say, once dead tree, will have stronger branches and grow better fruits and better canopies.
But if their water capillaries are cut,or destroyed due to the water expansion, -from the ice or frost, they are gone.
You are right, usually farmers or gardeners with lots of experience even get surprised sometimes what tree or plant, once written off.... came back beautifully.
But let's be honest most of those gardening blokes don't know anything. No blame, they are cheap farmers hired, to do whatever their leader orders them to do.
And there is the problem, that we have complete morons running the watering and gardening in Kunming. I asked one of the fore workers, once what sort of flower bush this is. He had actually no clue, and ordered his team to spray it for 5 minutes. A few weeks later, it was dead.
human poop water isn't harmful for the plant, necessarily but it's harmful for humans and it can lead to unwanted growth and even kill a plant. If you have a garden, pee once a day on a small tree or bush and see what happens.
The sewage water is from a closed water cycle, and it won't come back unless it rains.
Sometimes the stupidity of Kunming's city management is still surprising me. Although it's funny sometimes.
The stuff I mentioned is something anyone, who ever planted more than one flower or plant, knows. And should know.

发布者I saw it's a monthly meet up again. i wish i could come today. i really want to check it out. who doesn't like to discuss beer while having a beer?
Darryl,
I apologize, getting you and your homebrewing society wrong. And I thank you for being out there, doing all this non profit. I hope that one day you will make good money from it. And spread the good word and work even better.
As the German sayings go:
"Hopfen und Malz, Gott erhalt's"
"Soll durch meinem frommen Segen, der Braumeister haben, ein langes Leben."
I totally agree with your idea about beers and the quality and perception of a good beer.
I hope I can make it another time.
Sorry, for me,being ignorant.

发布者the purity law doesn't restrict variety at all. it just defines the main ingredients.
most belgium beers are added with something. many non beligiums referr to it as headache additives. fruit flavors, etc. anyone who ever had 3 glasses of vedett(or hoegaarden) vs. 3 glasses of german wheat beer, knows what i am talking about.
don.t get me wrong, flavor wise i love belgium beer, but i prefer german beer because it doesn.t make you feel bad in low doses.
sounds like the homebrewing guy makes quite good money from the homebrewing, especially as he is just starting his network and fees, which i see rising very soon, to get to his ingredients, of which he gets commissions and so on.
germany probably still is home to the vastest varieties of beers. e.g. obergaerig, untergaerig,
wheat, dark wheat, koelsch, alt, bockbier, dark bockbier, pils=lager, berliner weisse, franken alt, nordisches herbes pils(my favourite), meet(german pronunciation), honig bier, fruchtbier, etc...
i am not even trying to unclude any varieties adding juices, soda and flavors, like maibowle...and such...
as i said it.s not a competition, plus germany has thousands if microbreweries, and i never met any german claiming germans to have the best beer in the world.

发布者...-"that the Germans do it best "
What is this obsessive-German-beer bashing?
No German would ever insist that Germany has the best beer or such nonsense.
The Bad Monkey guys in their interviews, did it too?
Must be some kind of professional jealousy, I tried the Monkey's Wheat beer a few month back, and special flavor, and preferences, but that was hardly a beer, taste went from old, under carbonated Fanta with a shot of Chinese Baijiu! It was terrible and they still charged for this.
They had great beers in the past but, that fluid it disgusting.
Seeing them mocking other brewers or countries, while producing that sounds ridiculous.
Germany has cheap high quality beer, and a purity regulation that one must keep, if you want to put it on your label, tr call it a beer. And that's about it. Maybe that German beer is quite bitter [in my favor]
What Germany has, though, is a huge variety of different flavors and varieties.
But believe it or not, a lot of Microbreweries and home-brewers.
About beer/food pairing, in terms of fish, I can see how it could work but beer to seafood and fish, should be more of an emergency solution. A proper wine compliments the special seafood flavor more, than any beer.
But as I said I had beer with shrimp dishes and it went o.k. if they are malty, enough.
